Not from Canada but I figured you all might be interested.

After 10 years for going around in circles, I have decided finally, how I wanted to build out my M3. As it is customary, I am joining the build thread group to share in the car modifying experience. I hope you enjoy the thread as much as I have enjoyed owning the car. I have tried to place the images in chronological order as best as I can. I wish I had thought about documenting my cars journey when I first started down the road of modifying my car.

Car History
I started looking in September at 330ci’s, as I wanted a sports car to have for weekend drives. I had never owned a BMW and had only been had owned Ford bronco’s before. After some research, I changed my mind and ordered a M3 as it had the SMG system. I asked the dealer to order a silver one and let me know when it arrived. A week later, the dealer called me and said they had a customer back out of an order and asked if I was interested. At first, I was hesitant because I wanted silver but they gave me the options free off the sticker price so I agreed to buy the car. I am glad they did, as the color is one of the rarer colors for the M3 now. October 15th 2002 I bought my M3 with 88 miles on the clock and the journey began.

Now take this as coincidence or just me trying to find things but here are some interesting things about this car. I bought the car on October 15 2002. My favorite month is October, 15 is my lucky number, I was 22 at the time, car vin ends in 15, and the stock horse power matches the last digits of an item we all need to drive. They say when things are meant to be they will just happen. Based on what I have seen when I bought this car, it was supposed to be mine. Fast forward to 2011 and the 1M I bought had 8 miles when I bought it along with other interesting items like above. That though is a different build thread.

Here is a list of parts that I have tried in my quest to make the car into what I envisioned. Some of these parts were a big step in the wrong direction while others definitely were worth doing. I will post the current list of parts on the car later on as well as the parts that have been ordered. Once all the new parts are installed, I will make a master list of all the parts and part numbers.

UUC RaspX gen I
UUC Sway bars
Grouppe M Intake
Conforti Shark Injector
Evosport Headers
SuperSprint Race Cats
SuperSprint Gen II Headers
Vorstiner CSL roof with sun roof
Vorstiner CSL bumper With Fogs
OE 19 Rims
K&N Pannel Filter
Painted match reflectors
H&R Sport Springs
Koni Adjustable Shocks
Front Shock tower mount Swap
Powerchips software

First mod was a K&N Panel filter. Soon after that, I bought the UUC RaspX as I was trying to get rid of the metallic sound when you pushed the car. System worked great and I did not have any issues with it but I changed it out for a SS system to get more power.

I cannot remember when I got the muffler exactly but I went with an Eisenmann Race muffler with 83mm tips. It has been the only muffler that I have had on the car and it is still on the car today. The only issue I have had is the side bracket broke on a drive but it has been weld back to the muffler and no issue as of yet.

This was my first ever BMW and it was with a local E46 fanatic’s member in early November. It was a rainy day so I have proof these cars do not melt in the rain HAHA. It was only the two of us and we went to a local winding road section, which I call the test track. We took a ride in each other cars and took a few photos. Not much else to do when it rains and the roads are slick.

I do not know how or what caused me to start organizing drive meets but I have been doing it for as long as I have owned the car. The images below are the first ever run up HWY 1 I organized. At the time of this run, I only had the K&N filter and the RaspX installed.

I went with OE CSL rims to replace my stock 19inch rims. They arrived just before my first Bimmerfest in 2003. To my knowledge when I went to the Bimmerfest in 2003 I was the only one there with OE CSL rims. I had six people on the spot ask me to buy them from me. The image of the hand out the sunroof was me filming the group from Sacramento on our drive down PCH to LA area.

My second CSL purchase was the OE CSL Trunk. I think this part started a trend of me having stories when I change something on the car. When I was driving to the shop to have the trunk installed I was pulled over and got a no front plate ticket. No biggie but no one likes talking to the man for any reason. I get to the shop and they install the trunk but when they were backing the car out they backed my car into a Z06 corvette that the other tech was backing up. The look on my face must have been I am going to kill you cause the guy turned pail white. Car was ok other than the paint in the right light showing some spider marks. I will have it repainted soon when I install the OE CSL front bumper. When it rains it poor’s.

Another story in the long history I have had with the car. After organizing a drive down in the Bay Area , CA, I was driving back over the Bay Bridge and found some debris in the road. I just side swiped it enough with the rim to take a chunk off the lip and of course cause the loss of air pressure. I was able to limp across the entire Bay Bridge as it happened right as I entered on the San Francisco side heading east. I have no clue how I survived not getting rear-ended. At the time, I did not know you could fix rims so I ordered a new CSL rim. It was not until recently in the last few years I found out you could repair rims. I have had the damaged rim fixed along with another front rim and a rear rim. Joys of driving on crappy California roads. At any rate now I have a “spare” tire in case I need it.

I am not 100% of the parts order but I think to this point I have kept them in order. The next big purchase I did was to go to StopTech BBK, with stainless steel lines and ATB super blue. I have had no issues with the StopTech brake kit and could not be happier with the purchase. The only thing I wish I did was go with the slotted pads to get a little more bite and braking surface. Even with the cross drilled the car stops on a dime with change to spare =)

I wanted to be different so I installed a Vorsteiner Carbon Fiber roof with sunroof insert. I had it for about 5 months at which point I had a leak over the driver side window. I had this removed and found the reason was due to a poor install. Long story, but from that point on, I tried to stay with OE as much as possible for the items I wanted to change. A quick story on getting the roof installed was when I drove to LA to have the roof installed, when I crossed over the Grape Vine it lightly snowed on me. Granted for you folks in snowy areas you are like woos, but for CA that white, wet water stuff is a myth unless you live in the Sierras HAHA.

I used to have the Vorsteiner bumper with CSL splitter cutouts and fog lights. The fit was probably 90-95% on the mark but I could tell it was not OE. In an effort to get a OE fit I ordered a Euro front bumper and had the cut out for the splitters molded to match the Vorsteiner bumper. I have had this on the car for about 4 years, which is going to be replaced by an OE CSL Bumper. I did order a OE CSL diffuser which I have had on the car for years.

I have gone through several intakes over the life of the car. The intake that is currently on the car is installed an AFE intake stage 2 with a Samco elbow. The AFE intake was to replace a GrouppeM intake that I run on the car for a few years with the shark injector from Turner. I actually thought the GrouppeM felt faster than the AFE. I kick myself on the purchase of this intake sometimes but what is done is done. It has been in the car for years now and soon will be replaced with an OE CSL Intake =).

About 4 or 5 years ago, (a little foggy on date’s haha) I researched parts to remove all the crap part the shop that did the poor Vorsteiner roof install said were the best. I had a Turner Motorsports oil cooler installed, SuperSprint Stepped Header (I think v1), SuperSprint Stepped Race 100 cell cats installed, SuperSprint Center Section with Resonator, TC Kline dual adjustable coil overs, TCK 500/500 springs at the time of install, and TC Kline Camber plates installed. I am currently running 500/600 on the spring rations now and love the way the car drives.

This was the day I was washing the car that the drive side leak appeared. This was my biggest fear about going with the roof and it came true. As mentioned above it was due to a poor install.

I removed the leaky, poor fitting Vorsteiner carbon fiber sunroof and went with good old OE CSL. The shop that installed the roof is no longer around =( but they did an amazing job on the install including welding in the center section cross brace. I have had no issues (knock on wood) ever sense the OE CSL roof has been installed. The shop was so good I have working roof rack flaps as well. They were so thorough the even found the BMW manual on how to install the CSL roof.

In October of 2011, the wife and I decided we wanted to say we have driven down ALL of HWY 1 or PCH. We took a week of work and hit the road. We had no plans, no pre-defined stops, just the open road and a map. All we knew was we wanted to stop at Disney Land and end up in San Diego. Other than that, it was all up in the air. If you have not done the PCH drive from SF to San Diego then you are missing out. Once you get to Monterey heading south you really hit some amazingly beautiful country. It is well worth the time off to take trip. We did the northern section in April of 2012 to complete the northern and southern sections. Below are the Images of the car on that drive.

Yes the wife was driving the car for the HWY leg to Monterey. We both have been on HWY 1 from SF to Monterey so no need to retrace what we have already done.

Finally got the SMG controller from ESS. I was disappointed in how they returned the unit to me. Controller was not in a static free bag as I sent it to them and it was in a USPS flat rate box with only one pass of bubble wrap. They are also slow to respond to emails. Anyone else have these issues with ESS or am I just the lucky one? I have taken it for about 40 miles of driving and can’t tell 100% if there is a change. From what I notice it seems to change up a smidge faster and downshifts are a smidge faster in feel. I am taking it on a “spirited” drive this weekend.

Also arrived are the Samsco hoses as part of the coolant system refresh when I take out the radiator. Hopefully these will keep the car cool for many years to come =)

Finally was able to install one of the major parts on the M3 on Saturday 9/1/12. My wife’s father works for a Porsche/Subaru shop so I was able to get access to a lift so I could install the steering rack. I combined it with two oil changes as well. Might as well make the most of having a lift right. Below are the images of the day and the work done to the M3 and 1M.

Image of the wife driving the 1M to the shop. Nice morning AM drive on the free up to Auburn.

http://www.eurosunday.net/press/norcalcsl/Final Build/16-1m-work (1).JPG

1M was up first as that was just in for a oil change. So needed it as it was almost 7000 miles. I know bad M owner but I have been busy.

http://www.eurosunday.net/press/norcalcsl/Final Build/16-1m-work (2).JPG

The following images are of the install of the steering rack. Sorry for the crappy image quality as all I had was my Iphone. I forgot the good camera so this is the best I could do. The install of the steering was pretty straight forward and took about 2 hours to do the install. I also changed the oil as it was due.

The change in the steering is noticeable. I was concerned a little as some said they did not notice a change when they drove their M3 and a M3 with the competition steering rack. The steering feels sharper and I can notice I do not have to turn the wheel as much as I did before when making hard over turns. It is not major change but enough that makes the steering feel closer to the 1M which was my goal. I believe that if I did try the ZHP rack of a 330 it probably would feel a tight as the 1M does but I did not want to go that extreme. OK so enough talking from me, images of the work below.

I did a drive last weekend with some local NorCal guys up HWY 1 on a 189 mile loop. (345 miles total for me). For those who say there is not a major change between the CSL/ZCP steering rack and OE need to take it on a super twisty road. Like most I did not feel a major change when driving surface streets and making tight turns in town. Hitting the back roads and taking hair pin turns is where I really felt a change. Bear with me as I try to explain. Before on a tight hair pin I would have fully crossed my arms over and still would need to turn more to make the turn. IE remove hand(s) and turn the wheel more. Now I do not exceed making a parallel X when having to crank the car over. Sorry best way to explain it. Bottom line is I just got my justification the cost was worth it. ESS software seems to make down changes and up changes in mode 5 a tad faster for a update there.

Here is one of the images of the drive. If you care to see some more images of the group drive I lead you can see them at www.norcaldrivers.com. Hopefully I will expand this website to the other states for the routes/photo places if anyone ever sends me routes and photo locations…..

So the long awaited big items arrived today. Thank you to the Evolve guys for a great packing job. A thing to point out is that the bumper comes with the gasket, splitters, and tow hoot cover. So I have a spare tow cover, 2 extra splitters and a spare seal. Kind of nice but at the same time could have saved the funds. Ok as usual images below.

The bumper itself. It comes painted which is kind of a bummer as I need to repay it. The bumper also seems to be some sort of carbon fiber? First time seeing a OE CSL bumper off a car.

Today’s parts update was a woohoo and a damit moment. The Recaro Profi XL seats are at the shop along with the install brackets. We installed the drive side seat and epic fail. The seat with the bracket sits taller than the stock seats so my head was holding the roof up. We are looking into either new brackets or having to make custom ones to drop the seat low enough. So I have sets but not in the car.

http://www.eurosunday.net/press/norcalcsl/Final Build/25 - RecaroSeats (2).jpg

While at the shop I wanted to get a base dyno before all the big moods. Again another damit moment. We were only able to get to 2nd gear for the dyno test. We were able to at least use all the revs so we got a descent set of numbers. Max power was 317 and the consistent number was 312.4. Not too bad for a starting point.

So I did something stupid. I made it so I do not have to smog the car anymore but in order to do that I needed to so one last smog test. Well because of a minor oversight on my part, I was thrown into the idle and 2500 idle test group. In years past, I was able to pass the smog text because of yee old friend pictured below. The test was the rolling 20mph and 30mph tests. I passed with race software, 100 cell race cats and all the other intake / engine mods. All you need it the blue and orange can to make any car pass the sniffer =)

As I have to do the idle test, I fail that by 19 points but pass the 2500 test better than a Prius LOL. So I am off Friday to get a test section to pass the idle part only. This will be the last time is have to smog whoohooo.

Still waiting on the cam from Bekkers so I can start putting all the goodies on. Trying to time it to be done all at once as the car will be mostly apart.

Oh and the car just went over 59K finally =)

I am off tomorrow to get the car smoged for the last time hopefully. I had an O2 go out just before I had a test section made. The last few week I have had o drive the car around with a test section in that is bouncing around a little under the car. It is freaking me out a bit that it is going to break something as there none of the brackets are installed. Car hates having to work through 100 cell race cats and 2 high efficiency cats. Car is also being dropped off tomorrow for rear sub frame and diff upgrade to 3.91s

So I have had some parts installed a tad out of order. I had custom seat brackets made to have the Recaro seats installed. I had to have them made as I am using the sliders so the wife can drive the car still. I sit about the same height as the stock power seats. The goal was to drop weight and sit lower. I could get about a inch lower if I went to a non fixed slider but as mentioned above the wife needs to drive the car. Here are some quick pics of the seats installed.

Car is back after being gone for the weekend. So here is the latest and greatest.

Got the car smogged for the last time WOOTTT. As you can see I am cleaner than a prius… 4 cats can do that HAHA. Anyone needs a test section I will loan it out for $30 bucks.

http://www.eurosunday.net/press/norcalcsl/24-SmogCert (1).jpg

http://www.eurosunday.net/press/norcalcsl/24-TestSection.jpg

After I got the car smogged I took it straight over to the fabrication shop to have the rear sub frame done as well as have the diff upgraded to 3.91 gears. Trying to time work when things can be done together. My car had started to show signs of spider cracks on both sides. The frame had not "completely cracked" but if I had not done the reinforce kit it would have eventually done so. Here is some images of the car at the fabrication shop.

http://www.eurosunday.net/press/norcalcsl/25-RearSubframe (1).jpg

http://www.eurosunday.net/press/norcalcsl/25-RearSubframe (2).jpg

http://www.eurosunday.net/press/norcalcsl/25-RearSubframe (3).jpg

http://www.eurosunday.net/press/norcalcsl/25-RearSubframe (4).jpg

http://www.eurosunday.net/press/norcalcsl/25-RearSubframe (5).jpg

From what I have found and what the shop believes as well is the reason the frames are cracking is fatigue failures. Same issue with aircraft hulls and the pressure changes. The metal eventually begins to fracture with the constant pressurization and un-pressurization.

The fatigue part in our cars is the loading and unloading going around turns. This constant flexing causes the area to fail. Bad job by BMW not to beef this up for that is the reason for the cracks. Stiffer suspension only acerbates the issue faster. As the car has 59000 hard miles on it from back roads driving and being on CA roads I guess I am not surprised to know I would potently have the issue.

Last of the recent changes is the 3.91 gears upgrade. Already I can feel a change in the car and I don’t even have them broken in. I t made sense to do the diff work now as I had the sub frame out. Pics are of the old 3.61 stock gears.

The car is now back at home after two months of being on vacation LOL. The shop I took the car to was kind enough to take images of some of the work as they did it. I need to give a major kudos to the shop for doing the work and doing an AMAZING job.

IPB-Autosport - Independent Sacramento Audi, Porsche, BMW, Mini, VW Specialist.
Address: 1206 C St, Sacramento, CA 95814
Phone: 916-453-1465

They had to do some learning in order to put it all together as well as do some customizing in order to make a factory fit and finish. They made it all come together so if you want to do something crazy like this in CA than this is the shop. They also have all the Evolve stuff as well as they programed the car for me. Next step is to paint the front bumper and break in the diff and cams for 500 miles =)

No the images you all have been waiting for. Here is a LARGE compilation of images of an OE CSL INTAKE, OE CSL Air duct, and OE CSL Cams install. I will make NO apologize for the in-depth amount of images of the install done. Thank you again to the shop for taking the time to document =)

Car is off to paint today =) Hope it will not take as long as it did to install the CSL parts LOL. After paint, it I can break in the car for the 500 miles needed to set the DIFF gear. After all the break ins and fluid changes, I will work on the videos and a nice photo shoot of the car.

I decided to do a complete breakdown on the current setup of the car in regards to parts. This also includes all those little parts that never seem to be posted when these projects are done. I hope that this will help people in the future if they decided to go down this path or just trying to find that missing part. The parts list below is just a parts listing but I have included a price break down in a Google Doc.
**Please note: these are prices as listed on the website as of 2/2013 – not what I paid for them** I have been building this car going on 11 years now.https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AsvVWLBz-tX_dDhMT1BWNkl6eFhXc0FWbFJMa0RvWEE&usp=sharing

I just updated the XLS Sheet with a few KEY parts that were missed. I also added in parts estimates based on past parts as well. Based on the current prices I would have been HOSED. Glad I got a lot of this done YEARS ago.

Got the car back from paint and had a few minor issue around the grill that need to be fixed. Will be taking care of those after interior.

Dropped the car of last Friday 3/1 to have the interior done. So hope to have the car back this week with everything done less a bath.

Also started the 1M build. This is the "light weight" build

Will post images once I get the car back

So I finally have a real update. I got the car back from interior and paint touch up WOOT. Interior looks great and the CSL 1M doors look pretty good. I REALLY need to clean the inside as the car has been gone for 4 months and the shop dust builds up. So here are some quick interior images.

I spent Saturday morning on 4/20 installing the passenger seat sensor. The Install was easier than I made it to be as I didn’t realize the seat sensor I needed was on the bottom of the old stock seats. So had to go over to storage and get the part and plug it in. Next step is to go to the local BMW shop to clear the passenger airbag code.

Had another Saturday free and went to the future father in laws shop to adjust the front bumper. Still trying to get it just right but we did close the gap a little more than it was. Will be working on it this weekend again to hopefully get it all just right.

So if you are going to do something right, GO all the way with it. So I went full vanity and got a new custom plate.

I have a new tune from Evolve I will be installing to address the slight issue of the car running rich.

I have two updates. First update is I installed the new Evolve Tune. This was to address a slight running rich issue the car has at start. They also added a CSL rev match which does a better job than stock SMG tune.

Second update is a video, but I will post that later. I know I am mean.

Love it. Was the reason I bought the car. You have to learn how to drive it right as there is some quirks. But once you learn them and remember to use them and not fight them the car is flawless.

First weekend I had time to clean the car and get it ready for the 500 mile drive down to bimmerfest. As it was Mothers Day I was only able to clay bar the car, clean the engine bay and polish the wheels / brake calipers. Next few nights are polish and wax the car and detail the interior.

Here is the first steps in the cleaning process.

Here are a few images from Bimmerfest 2013. The car covered the 1100 mile adventure without skipping a beat. The only issues I had were ones that started before the trip. Need to check the resistors for the airbags and make sure they are connected as I still have the “where is the airbag light” and one of the O2 sensors is out again. I think I am going to have to have Evolve to the rears off as I have replaced both rears and the code I read said rear O2. If it is best to have them on then I need to figure out why I fired another one. For now, I have to clear the code about every 4th start.

Nicely done! I've mulled-over CSL-izing many times in the past (though I don't have SMG, and prefer it that way for myself)-- great to see that you dove in all the way. After a couple of trips to Cali-- what I wouldn't have done for your car to blast-up and down Hwy 1!! (though my first trip involved a several day Cayman rental)

Awesome job-- just the intake sound is ALMOST worth the $$.

With the new season of Top Gear on now, I can share my images from my visit there. While on honeymoon, we stopped by to see the airfield as well as the studios. We initially were told no but when the guard found out we were on honeymoon he gave us a tour.

We got to see the new reasonably priced cars, the trailers that were really the Top Gear production offices and inside at the studio. The studio was not setup yet as they just finishing filming a movie there. It is worth to note that production offices are really the production offices, even though they made jokes about it. One last interesting thing is the stars that come on the show enter through a storage closet LOL. All the budget for the show is for the cars and trips is for sure.

I could not post it until now as we were there before the show aired and did not want to get anyone in trouble.

While there we also saw the new McLaren Mp12-4C GT being tested. We could not take pictures of it of course but saw it flying down the runway. It was flat black and fly’s like a bat out of hell.

I also got a souvenir that I can’t post what it is but if you ever are coming to an event, remind me to bring the official paper work I have of TG =). It was a great time there and the guard was a amazing wealth of knowledge and hoot to talk to.

All the images I was allowed to take.

Sorry for the lack of updates.

I will have some images of the new toys that just came in but in the mean time I wanted to give some feedback on the current setup.

On 9/14 completed a 255 mile drive around Lake Tahoe with a crest of about 8900 feet. The car was running great but I think I need to tune the car better as it felt down on power more than I was expecting. Also the clutch seems to slip a little when running AC so not sure if I finally wore out my clutch or if it is a tune issue as well.

I am still trying to figure out a rear 02 issue and get the airbag sensors figure out.

Recent updates in the world of car modding.

Purchased a new DME so I now run the MSS54HP module vs the none HP module. This was done so I could have an H-bridge installed in an effort to have the flap work. Having the flap working is more of a novlty and once working I will RE-disable it LOL.

Below are image of the new CSL Map rail and map sensor. These were installed to have the car use the map sensor for low RPM reading and AlphaN for high band.

So a random update. Last night for some reason, I went off reservation and ordered some parts that make absolutely no sense. I decided to order based my cost analysis from looking at so many different possible directions. The cost came out to a few hundred less to go this way but still off reservation.
