The rumormill has been running in overdrive the past few months regarding the powertrain that will be employed in the next generation BMW M3 (F80) and M4 (F82), but now it appears the mystery has been finally been confirmed.
According to the President of BMW North America, Mr. Ludwig Willisch, who confirmed to BimmerPost.com the news at a recent event, the next generation BMW M3 and M4 will indeed incorporate an inline six-cylinder engine unit and not a V-configuration as previously reported.
BimmerPost reports that, "Mr. Willisch said a V6 configuration was previously considered (including whether a motor based on the current M3's S65 engine minus two cylinders was appropriate), but ultimately ruled out."
The new unit will replace the 4.0-liter V8 that resides in the outgoing model. It has been suggested that it will have a displacement of around 3.0-liters and will feature twin-turbo or tri-turbo technology producing a final output of around 450 PS (331 kW / 444 bhp).
The new generation also sees the introduction of the M4 Coupe and convertible which are essentially re-badged versions of the M3 bodystyles. It is part of BMW's new naming strategy that will also see the introduction of the 2-series and M2.
Word on the street suggests the new BMW M3 will be unveiled either late 2013 or early 2014.

I still don't get the M4 thing...like in this article...the M4 is a re-badged M3...but they're still making the M3? So 2 same cars just with different names?

M3 will be a 4 door sedan.
M4 will be a 2 door coupe.

That is what the rumors are saying. I still don't think BMW will do it. Atleast I hope they dont, if anything the coupe should be the M3. M4 should be the sedan.

^^ It should be the other way around

and what the heck is the point in renaming the car with 4 doors, they never did that in the past

I thought they were dropping the sedan completely because of poor sales?

Au Contrair, BMW Canada had a 3-4 month waiting list for the 2 door and a 12-14 Month waiting list for the 4 door. That said they were bringing in more 2 doors than 4 doors but the allotment was sold out of 4 drs, prior to selling out the 2 doors. No problem selling what ever BMW AG would allow to come to Canada. I have a friend who ordered a 4 door in July and just took delivery of a 2 door two weeks ago as there were no more 4 doors coming to Canada until this new F30 M3 arrives......

I hope the do bring the I6 back, but i'm still putting my money on the V8, i just don't think they're gonna go back. Competition is tight.

I heard recently that BMW is rebranding it's entire lineup.

1 Series will be 4 door - 2 Series will be 2 door.
3 Series will be 4 door - 4 Series will be 2 door.
5 Series will be 4 door - 6 Series will be 2 door.
7 Series will be 4 door - 8 Series will be 2 door (possible future development)

This way if you wont have to say "I've got an 3 Series coupe" you'll just say you have a 4 series, etc.

This whole naming business is just ridiculous its a good idea to differentiate between the coupes and sedans without having to actually say it but I think theyve waited too long because they have just too many cars out now it mightve been a good idea in the mid 90's when they had just the 3 series 5 series and 7 series.

I like the way BMW's styling is going. If you've had the privilege of driving the new F30 335i, they are amazing. Interior is gorgeous, especially in sport trim, and if you drive the Automatic 8 speed, they are pretty decent, getting closer to DCT territory with shift capability. The 6 speed 335i M-Package is a stunning looking car in person, pictures don't do it justice.

It's like a mini M5. I've seen one next to M5 in the same colour combo. Similar styling.

But:
No sedan in the 1/2 series....
6 series comes in 2 and 4 door (Grand Coupe). Unless you mean the 6 series Grand Coupe will be the new 8 series (but that would be 4 door) ???

I'm confused..................lol
