In the summer of 2010 I went to a BMW CLUB lapping event at Mont Tremblant, Quebec. A few friends that were taking part in the event had two E30 and my cousin with a MINI JCW. I had never been for a spin in a E30 but always appreciated the beauty. That sexy front end. Instantly admired the dashboard layout and the drive, SOLD! Saved up some bread and after 4-5 months on searching/seeing different e30s, I fell upon this.

I paid 3500$ with CLEAN Black leather interior
230 000 KM-142 925 Miles
Rebuilt calipers, new brakes, brake lines, fluid
Billy sports with H&R "lowering" springs
New rad
Tranny Mounts/ Flush
Crack free dash
These are a just few things replaced from previous owner. I was given a folio with the bills.
I decided to start buying parts so the car could be repainted.
Found clean doors from a local add. I went to see the seller, he was fed up of having these parts in his garage, so he sold all this for 100$

Love the outcome.

Now that the car is in storage, I was suffering from a dilemma. Have the car painted or touch the mechanical side. Choice? Motor. A good looking car isnt gonna make it run better. Spoke to a friend which is specialist in VW/AUDI about taking part in this build. He agreed due to the fact that we''re good buds and because he wants to branch out his knowledge into BMW. R3V is the major part of my knowledge on this swap. Im still learning and reading builds every day. Thank you for all the time and effort people take on this forum. Here's what we will be working.

Monday afternoon, I got to the garage with determination to remove the head from the block. Started by removing the cams and then the timing cover. The pistons look pretty good. The head is gonna be sent out to be rebuilt. Also ordered about 400$ of major parts.
- Chains with Guide Rails and Tensioner
- Head Gasket Kit, Head Studs
- Timing Cover Seal
- Timing Cover Gasket
Will have some pics up once I recieve the parts.

This Monday was a big day for me as I set off to get the engine timed. Instead of buying the cam locking tool, I decided to fabricate my own. Using a steel plate, 3 holes and 3 bolts, I was able to lock the cams in the top dead position. Since, my buddy and I have never timed a BMW engine, we used pelicanparts.com as our step-by-step guide to do it right. Also, a E34 pan arrived. In the box was the pan, suction pipe, dipstick and dipstick tube. Went to visit my baby in storage just to let her warm up.

Thanks Levent.. This update is for you.
I chose to keep the stock M52 exhaust manifolds instead of buying the long tubes as I read that they create problems. I had that Air Intake tube holes welded. Sanded and prepared the headers for High Heat Header Paint.

http://i1227.photobucket.com/albums/ee428/mtlbloodshot/318is%20Build/Iphone006.jpg

Once those were ready I waited for a nice package from GUTEN to arrive at the my door. The order was brand new studs and copper bolts. The headers were heat wrapped by me just for the look.

So update for today, I needed most of the stuff for the ODB1 swap and instead of buying everything, I found a M50 VANOS for 500$... The block and head wont be needed as all the pulleys. The motor will be stripped ASAP. I also have a red label 413 for sale.

So, today the update consists of the M50 being stripped and the wiring harness cleaned with a rag and degreaser. All the sensors are installed and connected to the harness. The brackets that are used for the ODB1 harness was sanded and painted. Enjoy

Just a minor update for today. I needed to fabricate a bracket to hold the E34 dipstick. Sheet metal and got to measuring, cutting. I know its not the prettiest thing in the world but it does the job. Also purchased a 97 M3 S5D 310 Transmission. 120 000KM on it. Looks mint. Turns nicely too.

May 3, 2012---

After a week of waiting, the brown truck brought a nice box. A M3 CLUTCH & PRESSURE PLATE along with a F1 16lbs FLYWHEEL. They offer there own clutch kits but I wanted OEM so without a doubt got the SACHS KIT. The Flywheel looks great. I've read good things about it, why not give it a try!

After the clutch came in, I was pumped to get everything together and the transmission on. It was a good month that motor wasn't touch and I've been itching to do something to her. Enjoy these pics. More parts coming, More Updates coming!

While waiting for a HUGE shipment from ECS.. I kept thinking about what I was going to do about the famous brake booster.. At first, the booster was gonna be moved over 1/2 inch blah blah. After researching, I found out that a AUDI A4 brake booster could be used by shortening the push rod and modifying the E30 clevis. Good news for me is that my buddy had just what I needed.. Mint booster with a MC and the res. Also went to local scrap yard and found this beautiful VDO gauges in a Audi Quattro. They came surrounded by a wood panel. That will be changed. Got all three for 5$. As soon as the ECS shipment arrives, pictures will follow....

have you tried putting the engine in the car? My brother did, and the oem headers were hitting the subframe. He needed to get the longtubes to make it fit...

Good progress though! should be a solid engine :)

I heard that the long tubes hit the subframe :/ The oem headers dont seem long enough to cause a problem..

Yeh, I'm using stock M50 manifolds and they're great.

mtlbloodshot
05-16-2012, 05:51 PM
Are the M50 and M52 headers exactly the same?

sb_600
05-16-2012, 06:11 PM
Really eh? Cuz the flange on Chris' M50 manifold was hitting his subframe.... maybe it's because he was running AKG mounts that lowered the engine?

mtlbloodshot
05-16-2012, 06:26 PM
Im planning on using AKG mounts too but im not sure if the M50 and the M52 headers are the same... If the flange does touch the subframe, ill either cut it off and make the header a one piece with the downpipe. If not ill just buy the long tubes

MaxBell
05-16-2012, 11:21 PM
Im on E28 525i mounts and i have enough room to mate a flange to the manifold and gracefully arch it down along the firewall/transtunnel.

ECS has been waiting for my UUC DSSR so every thing has been delayed for shipping. Their expected ship date is for tomorrow (June 1) Hope they are correct. Anyway, like Ive said before, once that comes in, I'll have a large amount of photos to share. For now, I picked up an amazing deal on AKG bushings. The guy started a 318IS project but decided to give up on it so put this for sale... I picked them up right away. Drove about 90 mins to meet him but well worth the drive..Enjoy and stay tuned!

Looking at your subframe bushings, I bought the same ones. But I guess my sticker fell off in shipping. I had no clue what way to install them so I put them upside down(smaller side up top) and when I saw this I panicked and called AGK. He said it didn't matter. It will help you offset your camber if you raise the subframe aprox 5mm.

Just I'm not sure how the diff will line up now. Haven't installed that yet.

Had nothing else better to do.... So I stripped my steering rack, got it sand blasted and was going to powder coat but my buddy didn't want to risk scrapping his enough with the PS fluid that was left inside the rack. Anyways, I painted it myself. Wasn't the first time. Im glad with the over all result.

Well since my last update, a lot of stuff was done on the car. I finally took the hit and made the AKG purchase. I was going to use the e28 green mounts but like my buddy says, might as well put the good stuff while you're there (Levent). Remember back I found the deal on the AKG bushings for extremely cheap, well having everything AKG is a great idea. Here's the purchase.
-M5X Engine Mounts
-Non Airbag Steering Rack Kit
-Flex Shaft Coupling
-E30 Transmission Mounts

This weekend, the car was brought in where it's gonna spend the rest of the summer, fall and winter. Its only coming out next summer (2013). Who knows, it might even get painted.
Stripping the machine began. The interior was very very easy but the front end wasn't so fun. Rust sucks. Luckily I have fenders, hood and front bumper. Have to change both rockers and rear outer wheel wells. Going to pick a valance when the time comes. All the wheel well liners are off, exhaust is off. More updates to follow. Enjoy

3.23 LSD!!!
Last night I found an amazing and rare deal on a local differential from a 2000 Z3M Roadster. Long story short, the gentlemen was told by a dealership that the diff had to be replaced. He purchased himself another diff to have the same "ticking" noise. Went to get a second opinion and found out that there was no problem with it. Stuck with two 3.23, he sold the car and decided to put the original one for sale. Found it, called him and tonight went to pick it up. It turns very freely, beautiful inside with 50 000 Miles on it. Never really abused he said. Sadly, it didn't come with the cover. I'm planning on using a E30 cover or saving up the loot and getting the finned. Time will tell. As for work on the car, I removed the front sway and found out that both are Suspension Techniques bars which was a big bonus for me. I sanded lightly and gave the front a new fresh coat of the original lime green look.
Pictures off the finished product to follow.

As promised, this post will be pictures of both sway bars, fully repainted lime green. I know why repaint them the same color. They didn't need to be resprayed but I'm trying to base myself on a self satisfaction theory. Removing the rear bar was a PITA but after speaking with a buddy, he told me to drop one of the springs and it came out easily. One of the rear sway bar tabs broke so that will be have to be welded back. Here are some pictures. Next thing to do on my list is remove the coolant and the rad that way I can remove the engine soon, but before that I will remove the quarter windows and doors. Stay tuned!

Last night, I made a lot of progress in two hours time. To start, I drained out the coolant in my rad. During it was draining, I removed my cluster. Will be for sale soon. After that was removed, I took the plunge in removing the side view mirrors and the Shadow line trim. I was nervous about it kinking or bending to the point of return, but everything went well. Found some rust on the bottom of the B pillar (driver side). Soon I will be cleaning and painting my Rad with fresh paint.

Last week a nice order was made with ECS and today, the package arrived. To start, they had a FRONT BUMPER MOUNTING KIT including every single bolt, nut, washer, bracket that has to do with the front bumper. Good deal. Since, the order was being made, front and rear discs were purchased. Brembos and for the pads, EBC "green stuff". There was a mix up with the order so the front pads didn't arrive and I'm still waiting for my UUC DSSR. When the M3 steering rack was stripped for sandblasting and powder coat, the lines that are on the rack had to be scrapped so those too were ordered. Enjoy

Burnt the crap out of the bushing so it can go for a nice sandblast. Once it's back, the AKG bushing will be popped it.

This morning I mounted TOYO TR1s to my back wheels. I personally don't like the idea of mix matching tires (front and back) but since my buddy had these in his shop, they will be used. He had them on his car for about 1 or 2 months. They're brand spanking new. 215/40/16. Very minimal stretch, exactly what I wanted.

For progress today, not much. Just took apart my AUDI A4 brake booster and gave it a quick little respray. Put the MC back on but will wait for the Reservoir because I've read that the brake booster works but the RES sort of kisses the Throttle Control Valve. Time will tell once I drop the motor in.

A rainy day here in Montreal, so having the day off work, I went to the shop and got to work on painting my M42 Rad. Nothing else to do. The reservoir was removed and a new one was ordered. Should have it tomorrow. The other day, I found a mint IS trunk lip for 50$. Contacted the seller and met him the same night.

I pressed in the AKG Diff Bushing into the cover that I had sandblasted and powder coated. I coated around the bushing with grease. I used the 1 TON press that we have at the shop. Fit like a glove.

This might be the last update I post before leaving for H20. New wishbone brackets. Turns out that worldpac sent me two of the same (passenger side).
It was sent back and will receive the correct one latest Monday. Dropped some grease on the AKG CAB and again used the press. Went in nice and easy.
Red and black make a great combo. I hope to be dropping my engine soon.

Well today was the day that I've been waiting for. I finally got the M42 out. It went smooth. I started by removing the ECU by passing it through the firewall, then unplugged the power wires. Drained both the oil and power steering fluid. Completely dropped down the driveshaft. Next thing to do is remove all the brake fluid including the lines and ABS pump. After that, degrease and high pressure wash the engine bay.

Today I got to the shop with the intention to degrease and power wash my bay, but as always, nothing goes as planned. I started removing everything that was left in the bay, including that damn brake booster. Reading most build threads on here, a lot of people complained about the brake booster, and I finally realized that they are right. I still got the thing out after an hour of messing around under neath the dash. The heater core is out for good as I will not roll the car in cold weather. The fire wall insulation or whatever it is, gone and is not going back. ABS pump is gone and so are the brake lines.
Next step is taking out the fuse box. Im not looking forward to that. Here are the pics.

So, after doing some research, I found that removing the fuse box is a big pain. I just pulled the wires as much as I could from under the dash and pulled the fuse box to the side. The throttle cable was removed and so was the clutch master. Since it was a beautiful fall afternoon in Montreal, I rolled the car out of the garage and pressure washed the bay with some intense degreaser. I scrubbed as much I could with a metal brush and had to use scotch bright for the tight spots. The bay looks very clean now, except for the rust spots on the rad support but for a car that was driven in the winter, its fairly clean. My body shop guy said everything will be good. The shock towers are in great condition. Plan... shave all the holes in the bay and possibly do a wire tuck.

Woke up early to get some work done on the car.

http://i1227.photobucket.com/albums/ee428/mtlbloodshot/318is%20Build/October19014.jpg

Another hour to remove the floor carpet. I cut around heater core as I don't want to remove the dash. The carpet is going to be washed. Maybe dyed black. Have to have the floors redone because of the rust.

Yesterday afternoon I got the rad support I ordered from BMW. It took 2 weeks to arrive because it was brought it from Germany. The car was hit in the front a while back and the rad support was crooked and rusted. Opted to change for a brand new to not have problems. Mad expensive. 330$.

Test fitted my wheels in the back just to see if the fender needed to be pulled, rolled or cut the inner lip.
Since the car is going on air ride, I removed the spring and compressed the shock as much I could before the tire touched the fender. With a roll, it should be perfect according to my measurements.

It's a while I've been hoping that when this day would come, everything would go nice and smoothly. Thankfully it did. My rear subframe dropped without any problems. I took it down as a whole. I placed a transmission lifter to hold it up as I backed the big bolts that come down from under the rear seats. As I started to remove the nuts, I felt that the subframe was coming down on her own. Dropped the car down and placed two jack stands on each side and a car jack under the diff. Maybe pouring Rost Off down into the holes for a week helped.

Yesterday I cut off the rivets on the steering joints. Dumped them in degreaser, scotch bright and degrease again. Left those to sit over night.
Arrived at the shop, gave them a quick rinse and a dry. Got started on assembly of the AKG E30 - E36 Steering Rack Conversion Kit with the Poly Urethane Flex Shaft Coupling. Everything went well and looks good too.

Having the right tools to do something is the greatest thing someone can ask for. I removed all the bushings that were stuck in the subframe and the trailing arms in roughly an hour. Since I'll be using a Z3M diff, I had to remove the output flanges from my stock diff. Very easy.

Well since cars don't like being winter driven, my 318is showed signs of it. The driver frame rail was rotted and so was the floor. Passenger side was "alright" but still needed work to be perfect. My body guy cut out what was rusted and welded thick metal to repair the floor/frame rail. Also the jack points were crap so those too were done. Here are some before and after pics.

After opening a thread asking about Crossmember Reinforcement, I got some comments saying that M42 crossmembers are more likely to crack. I wire wheeled around the mount points and found that one side was already starting to crack. Had to do something about it. Instead of purchasing a made kit, I took the thickest piece of sheet metal I could find at the shop, cardboard paper and got to work. Made an outline quick quick and modified it on the fly. They came out alright.Hopefully they do the job. Had them welded and also freshened up some spots. Next up have to make the holes.

I wasn't very surprised when I saw my wheel wells with the wheels/subframe off. Apparently they really are one of the e30 weak spots. Being driven in the snow for who knows how long, they really took a beating. The driver side can be saved according to my friend but the passenger needs to be replaced completely. It's rotten to the point of no return all the way up to the gas cap. Driver side has already begun.

At this point of the build, I am well over my intended budget but hey, do it once, do it right. Enjoy the rust.

Great day! Went to pick up the rear subframe, trailing arms and crossmember from sand blasting. They look great. Obviously they aren't perfect as they are 20 years old but once they are painted, they'll be much better looking than rusty and old.
Just waiting for my friend to finish painting a car in the paint booth, then they'll get painted black with a tough clear.

My Z3M Diff gasket was placed with silicone. Brand new copper washers on the bolts and drain plugs. AKG bushing pressed in. I searched around online and saw that 45NM is a good number for the torque on the bolts/plugs. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I ordered a OEM outer wheel well from BMW West Island in Montreal. I was told that it would take 2-3 business to arrive but some how got it the next day. This part is usually changed once the quarter panel is removed so we had to make it work somehow. Decided to take the part and cut it into sections to make it fit. It's a shame to take a brand new part and chop it into pieces to make it work but hey, it saves time and makes every ones job easier. Next up, is the battery tray in the trunk.

After excessive reading and questioning, I found out clearly that I'll need 6 cylinder differential output flanges for my Z3M DIFF. Luckily a good friend of mine has a parts car with a medium case off. Went to see the car yesterday, differential was sitting there inside the car. Removed the flanges and took them with me. Got to the shop this afternoon and started removing all the crap that was on them. First picture shows the difference between clean and dirty. Once they were cleaned, I sprayed them with high heat flat black paint.

Got the new half shafts I ordered Monday afternoon. I painted them just incase they try to rust. Next thing to be done is drop down the gas tank. It might have to be sent out to clean up and make sure there isn't any rust inside or cracks. Have to bring it down before I reinstall the rear subframe. Planning on ordering my rear wheel bearings and the front control arms soon.

Amazing work! How did you make your shifter tall like that if you don't mind me asking? Is it just a knob, or did you change the lever?

Its a TRM shift knob. If you go on their website you can actually get custom heights made.

Glad to see you're making some good progress man, hope to see the car finished by this upcoming season. I'm just curious as to why you decided to go with air ride suspension?

Planning on starting the rebuild of the rear subframe so I had to clean the wheel hubs. Pretty simple. Degrease, wire brush, cleaning pad and paint. Routine. Also reinforced the front crossmember sway bar tabs but sadly I didn't take any pics of this. I couldn't find something solid laying around the shop so I just grabbed two full metal rods, welded them together and then welded to the trailing arms to make the "A" style reinforcement like the Z3Ms. I'll have more updates later tonight as the trailing arms, subframe and crossmember are currently drying from paint.

Friday, November 23, 2012 -- Continued

Picked up a perfect furniture dolly from a friend to rebuild the subframe. Since the parts were dried, I choose to put my AKG trailing arms and subframe bushings in. Everything went well. I couldn't figure out if the "collar" on the bushings had to go towards the outside or the inside. Looked for a few DIY and some pics, finally just put them towards the outside. Hopefully its the right way. The subframe bushings were marked UP on the bag so the collar had no choice to go on top. Next up, probably Monday, is to put the half shafts with the wheel bearings. Also got a Stainless Steel Clutch Line from UUC. It came out to be crazy expensive. 45$ with shipping plus another 25$ for UPS brokerage. I could of had it custom made.

Very productive day! Friday I got all my AKG bushings in and today I wanted to get everything settled in and torqued. Started off by tightening up the trailing arm bolts which pass through the bushing (49 ftlbs). Once that was done, we got new FAG wheel bearings pressed in. Went well. Brand new circlip installed. Again I was forced to clean and paint the dust shield. Maybe I should have got new ones but I couldn't wait to see this rear end assembled so what the heck. They obviously don't look new but they look better than before.
Once that was done, pressed in the hub and placed the new axle shafts with the nut (150 ftlbs) and axle lock nut plate. Smooth sailing so far. Might as well get the hand brake shoes and cables set in. Overall it was great day and next step is mount the trailing arm section with the brake lines, discs and caliper. Luckily everything that I need is already purchased. Just collecting dust.

Very little progress today.. Discs on (Brembo Blanks), painted them with ZINC just incase they try to rust. Calipers on with EBC "Green Stuff" Pads. Set up the trailing arm brake lines with the SS lines. They're not done but they are placed. ST sway bar links are set too. I was bored at the shop so I put on the AKG M50 Swap POLY mounts to my crossmember. Put on the new steering rack hard lines I got a while back and bolt that on with the E30/E36 RACK SPACERS. Maybe I should have put the steering rack on once the crossmember was on bolted to the car, but heck had nothing else to do.

Got the fuel lines removed and dropped the gas tank. I was planning on having it rebuilt since the subframe is out. The tank was recently replaced and its a jobber one from Taiwan. One place wants to rebuild it for 200$ or I found another place that imports tanks from the US. Decided to get a used OEM tank from Cali. The gentlemen said that I could swing by his shop to see the quality of the used tanks he receives to see if I find them "clean". I was impressed so Monday morning the tank should be at the shop.
I wire brushed spots under the car as soon it will be getting sprayed with sealer. Needed to remove the fuel filter bracket as it is all crappy and rusted. I found a aluminum AUDI bracket so that will be moded and fitted to the chassis. Also cut the nipple of the car so the bags can be fitted later.

I've been waiting on other things to get done with insurance claims at the shop which delays my car from going into the paint room. It's fine because the rear wheel wells still aren't done and I still haven't got my gas tank. Instead of doing nothing, I try to make progress. Ordered new control arms from Lemforder and new end-link bracket but I only received one today. Got the CAB fitted and also the sway bar.

I haven't updated this thread in a week so here is an update of what went on this week.
ECS delivered me rear mid section SS brake lines and rear bumper mounting fit. A lot of rear body work was done but those pictures will be coming this week. Car is going into the paint booth possibly tomorrow or Monday that way the bay can be painted.
My AUDI A4 MC was painted silver and fitted with a new VW peanut reservoir to make sure the Intake Manifold clears without modifying.

The day after a huge snow storm in Montreal, I finally got to the shop with time to work on my bay instead of shoveling/snow blowing. 40 cm of snow in less than 12 hours, I believe it was a record breaker. Anyway, I started placing everything back on the firewall like the fuse box, clutch MC, throttle cable and brake booster. Also passed the wires towards the outside of the bay so I can hide them in the fender. Tomorrow the car will be going back on lift so I can finalize everything. Enjoy

Thank you for the support and I hope you all like this build so far!

This is most likely the last update I do before 2013. Every single day, I post what I've done on the car and today it came out the paint booth. Back on the lift and without wasting any time, I passed my fuel lines. For the lines I used 5/16 Refrigeration Copper.
One of my buddy that moved from Montreal to Socal came to visit. He works at a junk yard so he brought me done a 740 3.5 MAF.

Well first post of 2013. Wishing you all a very happy new year. Now lets get this thing rebuilt shall we.

With my brake lines waiting in the shop, I wasted no time and started placing them starting by the rear. Tried to pass them the best I could and very happy with the result.
Once those were on, I connected the MID SECTION SS LINES. When the car was stripped, I found that only one mid line was stainless so a brand new pair were ordered from ECS.

http://i1227.photobucket.com/albums/ee428/mtlbloodshot/318is%20Build/January3001.jpg

After that, I attacked the rear subframe since everything was prepped and ready. It all went well with a buddy helping me out. We placed that dolly that it was laying on onto two wooden palettes just to raise it off the ground a little higher. Once we got it lined up, everything bolted up beautifully.

Next on the agenda is to finish the brake lines to the front and air ride lines.

FRONT BAGS ARE ORDERED :):):)

Getting closer and closer to dropping in the engine. I am excited but still haven't lost focus and doing things good once and move on. Since I'm still waiting on some parts to arrive from BMW, I placed the rest of my brake lines towards the front. They'll have to come down to make the bubble flares and maybe even paint them black.

Also the master connected with my UUC SS clutch line.

NOTE** For those who wish to use the same AUDI BRAKE BOOSTER & MC. The fittings are not the same as brake fittings. They are bigger so I recommend that you get the fittings that go to the MC.

Thankfully my car is at a AUDI/VW shop so those fittings are every where.
Passed and set my brake lines with the brand new T FITTINGS. I did the best to make it clean and tight as possible. Very happy with the outcome.

Finally got the engine in!

Started by getting the cross member set in. Torqued every single bolt to spec. I was worried about having problems with the steering knuckle but I used a air gun to push it on the steering column.

Cut my copper fuel lines and placed rubber fuel hoses at the ends.

Then finally. It was time to put the motor where it belongs. I had to remove the harness off the engine.

NOTE** For those using AKG E30/M50 ENGINE MOUNTS. You may have problems aligning them up with the engine arms if you place them to the cross member like I did. I recommend leaving them loose on the member and let the weight the engine place them properly.

Minor work but got some stuff done today. I connected up all my rear brake lines at the joints and made sure they were tight. Also got my UUC SS clutch line hooked up to the slave on the transmission.

Worked on lengthening the wiring to place the diagnostic in original E30 location.
Z3M Shifter with the UUC DSSR
NOTE** The DSSR is really tight fit to where it meets with the shifter.
Installed and got the engine ground finished.

Got my front bags today. My rear bags are on but not done, pics of the rear will follow soon.

I'm going to be installing mine a little different than the DIY that White325is has.
Instead of the using the adapter tube that comes with the kit, I started off by cutting the strut tube flush with the spindle. Then I messed around for about 1 hour cutting and grinding the inside of the spindle so the bag strut can slide into the spindle like they do on VW/AUDI applications. Once, the diameter of the spindle was wide enough, I slide the strut inside and voila. That'll be welded eventually.

I just need to clean up the spindles before they get welded.

I got her all wired up, cranked it without fuel for a couple of minutes and then she started easily. I took about 2-3 tries before she actually started. My friend which was filming ran out of space on his as soon as she started. So this is a video we took moments after.
It's currently running without a proper tune. Just basic Turner M50 chip that was in the ecu when I got it. She sounds good considering the fact that I've never rebuilt an engine nor have I ever timed a BMW Engine.
I love the backfire on the header.. Flame

Today I knew my friend was coming by the shop (he's a welder) so I prepared my knuckles by cleaning off any dirt and rust. Shortened the adapter tube and got that welded all around the knuckle. Next was to slide in and weld the actual strut body to the adapter tube. Paint to follow, get the top plate reduced in diameter because the one that comes with the airlift kit is way too big. Once that's all done, I can place it on the car,get everything hooked up and see how this baby airs out.
Here are quick pics I took.

The bags look good duder. I'm thinking I'm just going to come to Montreal and drive your car when it's on the road and judge the air ride for myself. It can sit on H&Rs and Bilsteins til then.

Also: it's not the headers that have trouble clearing the subframe, it's the downpipes which have to go on crazy bad angles. (which messes with your exhaust flo)

Taped and painted the Air Lift struts and the knuckles. I also spent a lot of time making the Air Lift top plates that come with the kit smaller so they can fit in the shock towers. Once the the struts dried, I assembled everything together and got them fitted to the car. It was very easy to put together. Torqued down the Control arm and the tie-rod arms to the required spec.

Today was a day full of hiccups as it began with having the wrong guibo. When I purchased the second engine (M50), it came with the guibo and I thought it was good to go but then realized that the ZF310/320 have a bigger flange so that was crap. Had to buy a new one. 90$ !!!!

I turned my concentration to finishing up the front suspension by putting on the hub, discs and calipers. Everything was going smoothly. Got the hubs cleaned up and painted. The wheel bearings where changed last year so they "should be good". Lets see how they hold up for. Before getting to the caliper assembly, I got interrupted once the guibo arrived. I wanted to see if this was the right one. Fitment was good until, another hiccup! The Z3M shifter is too long from the ball to the selector rod and causes the DSSR to sit at an angle which faces downwards. It comes into contact with the guibo and does not allow the transmission flange to spin freely. Looks like the Z3M shifter is not good for 24v swaps cause with the M42, I didn't have or maybe notice any problems. Going to get a 1.9 Z3 shifter or if anyone has another suggestions. I'm open to them. Enjoy.

Do you have a picture of the back bracket where the carrier attaches to the chassis? You have that bracket piece eh? I have a similar problem and think I'm going to move that whole bracket (and carrier angle therefore) upwards by drilling another hold higher up for mounting the bracket.

No idea on feasibility yet, I haven't tried it but and meaning to get around to it at some point... Or you could cut up your guibo :p

Nice job on the rest of the stuff!

I thought about that but even by making a higher hole, the top of the bracket touches the top of the transmission tunnel. What I did is, sold my Z3M shifter and got a Z3 1.9 shifter. It doesn't touch but just sucks that I lost the shortness of the Z3M shifter.
