View Full Version : Adding weight

In an attemp to add weight to slow me down a bit, and generally make John angry, I've added some weight to my car in the trunk.*th-up* More so I think I like doing these things because it's always my goal to to have that rare part, no matter now utterly useless it may be. Since Ernie and a few other guys around here have a glass moon roof, that's not really unique, so lately the OEM Pheba rear spoiler has been my only real unique piece.

I can't say I've seen anyone rocking one of these around here either.

I picked it up a few months ago from a dealership in California for a good price (It's NLA, but can be found on ebay for $300+). It's an OEM 9L spare fuel tank. It's no so much for carrying extra gas with you, but more for when you run out of gas while playing the "how long can I drive with my warning light on" game. I've never actually lost this game before, but I have rolled into a gas station after having to restart the car twice, so we'll call it a "tie". Someday when I finally win this game, I can walk to the gas station in style instead of shame.

It folds up nice and tidy:

The only problem with this tank is that it only fits inside 15" spare tires, meaning you have to have an "ix" weave, or a euroweave spare (or drive an e28, e32, or something). Step in; spare euroweave. I picked this up last year, threw on a cheap tire and chucked it in my pile of spare parts. It should be noted that a smaller 6L tank is also NLA, and can be found nowhere recenty. The 6L tank fits inside the 14" spares.

I don't like how light the 14" x 6.5" basketweave is, so I've gotta take it out in favour of the heavy ass 15" x 7" BBS RZ. Out you come light spare tire!!

In you go, heavy ass spare tire and heavy tin can! Nice and clean!

Thats all for now. Stay tuned for heavy weight stage two, coming soon!:moon:
(I can't wait to do stage 2!)

I like it, deff unique, not to mention they (tire+can) can easily be taken out at the track, so no big deal.
I saw this OEM fully functioning factory radar detector sell recently on r3v for $25, definately one of the cooler more rare factory parts/options I've seen for an E30, I'd love to find a deal like that some day..

Damn, how did I miss that radar detector!??

Add weight stage 2 is this:

Euro E30 M3 EvoII 15L long distance fuel cell. Should be a straight forward install, although I'm predicting problems with the filler neck being slightly too long, but I think there should be room for play without having to section it. You can see how its just a simple gravity feed. The filler neck just has a "Y" in it to redirect fuel into the tank in the trunk. I've got the gasket and all the bits to put it in, all I need to do is weld some mounting tabs in the trunk, run the vent tube back to the overflow tank, drill a hole in the bottom of the trunk for the filler tube, and install the filler neck. All other fuel lines in the rear wheel arch are only a couple of years old, so I'm not anticipating any funny business. There's a thread somewhere in here about how it weighs a lot and I shouldn't do it, but what do I care?! I added a second trunk light too, which has already slowed me down too much.

Here's the ugly beast! :

Well, the key is knowing what exists in the first place so that when they do come up, you can grab them. This one was for sale for a while, I just grabbed it when it was "clean up shop" time, and the price was right. Better yet, it came with all the bits, which is cruicial. Cruising realoem, and just being around these cars for so many years, there's very little I haven't seen before.

^^Which you might be crazy to buy at that price. I payed like 1/3 of that for mine. Hold out if you really want one... they come up on R3V every once in a while.

Your a strange one,I have no idea why you'd want an extra tank of fuel(or 2) carried around with you.More weight up high and too far back is obviously not good but I'd be more concerned of dying a horrible death in an otherwise survivable rear end collision.

The little tank stays empty all the time.

The big tank will only be full if I want it to be. I'll mostly just fill the upper tank when I'm doing a long haul drive. It's only 15L (24LBS of fuel when full) and it's the first part of either tank to empty out. The only thing that's going to kill me is the $95 it's going to cost me to fill up. BMW designed this thing, so it must be safe, right?:huh?: It's not like I'll be the only e30 to have one. It's arguably safer that being sideswiped on your driver's side and having your fuel lines split causing a fire. If I get rear ended, I'll be lucky if my seat even supports me on contact.

If you say so,I've personally never had a problem once in nearly 30 years of driving with running out of fuel-fuel gauge say look for fuel I pull over and get fuel.
Seems pretty simple to me.:)

I've gotta stay ahead of the game... I can't touch guys like Levent or "Meester Pieter", but I want to have the mother of all FS threads one day.

Is that all you got? Some trim rings?!! Where's the Alpina tach stripe or the "tach clock"? I'm diggin' the door handles though, nice touch.

Aww come on, that tach of yours clearly isn't euro [it dosen't have rear fogs] ....and a [$7] green strip tach sticker is hardly an upgrade, as for the clock [strictly a conversation piece!], why would I need 2 clocks and no tach?

Would love to find one of those spare wheel gas tanks, :idea:can envision it being pretty popular at the US & Mexican borders.

I won't be installing rear fogs any time soon, so no need for the euro cluster. I'll take a $7 tach stripe over some Made in China cluster rings any day of the week.

Why do you need a tach, isn't your car automatic?

Yep,I don't have 3 fuel tanks-good thing as I think I'll be leaving the e30 off the road this summer.I have too many things I'd like to improve and not enough time/money to do them all.
My wife picked up a '99 miata for her this year, its really the 1st car she can call her own so w'll put it on the road and leave the e30 till next year. She doesn't want to autox my open wheel car,I have a set of 710's she can run in stock class with.

The chain drive metro worked REALLY well and I didn't lose and arm to a chain or anything.*th-up*
