There are a number of people doing this. Google being one of the most interesting. They have a car that can drive 70mph in traffic handsfree. Check out this months version of wired. Mercedes has cars in the market that have cruise that will brake if you get too close, will actually take the driver out of the loop if you are going to crash. Big question... what happens when these cars are 7-10 years old and the electronics fails?

My neighbour's new Durango has a radar based cruise control that will brake to avoid impact.

That 'big question' has been a buzz in the insurance community for a while, dcramer! No answers yet. I suspect if the problem is wide spread, the manufacturer will have to own up. If not, it's going to be your fault :huh?: Reference Toyota's accelerator issues....

Even now there are bmw's without dip sticks, so if the oil runs out who pays ? No doubt this isn't an issue in the first 3 years, but after 7 years, when the idiot light for oil level burns out

they did say that an "ALERT" driver must still be present. so in the "wording" bmw will definitely make for certain they won't be held liable. imagine too hammered to drive...oh I'll just get my hands free coordinates keyed in and off to home I go..:D:D

or better still, officer, I wasn't driving...Christine took complete control. I think it's possessed she needs psychiatric evaluationfcplm.

Um, pretty sure the newer BMW's have it? It's called Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop and Go. It will actually bring you to a full stop, then start up again.

..and yes, there is a disclaimer.

( I'm actually reading the manual for my car because there is so much awesome stuff in the car that I want to really learn about and know inside and out. )

Some Toyota's have the cruise control radars as well (as i'm sure other "lower-end" manufacturers do).

They're also developing cars that will monitor your face while you drive so it knows if you're knodding off or doing other things like that so it will alert you and do something to get your attention (I think it makes noise and shows a coffee cup on the dash) - may be Mercedes.
I hope it's not racist like the kinect! :D

now that is pretty cool.face recognition and 2 warnings 2 sec apart - electric shock through the steering wheel should jolt someone out from their stouper. shock makes you let go of the wheel letting assist take over until faculties are regained?
:D

Now I think that's a bit much! they just need to put the windows down and turn the a/c on full blast in the winter and put all the windows up and blare the heat in the summer. That'll wake you up! (maybe not the heat...might make it worse. They'll have to rethink that one)

now they have facial recognition to unlock your phone, maybe BMW should make a "Face Drive" package to unlock and start your car. Great until they need to kidnap you (or cut your face off) to steal your car.... it could be the BMW version of this (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/4396831.stm)
