Hi guys,

I am putting together an engine for my car and I have a few questions.

The car is an 84 325e, and I am putting the i head on it. I have the head, intake manifold, afm and the i 173 ecu. My question is, do I really need the wiring harness from an i as well, or can i modify the existing harness to work?

Thanks, Phil.

You will need an "i" wiring harness. Since your car is pre 87 it's motronic 1.1 which is 35pin connector. Motronic 1.3 is 55pin.

Phil, I think you got your answer as the head of your wiring harness won't match the DME pin connection. 35 vs 55. You'll need to remove the harness and swap it out to make the 173 dme work.

Are you still in Guelph?

The hardest part about swapping the engine harness is getting that (*^*&% rubber grommet through the hole in the firewall. There's really not much to it.

No sorry I'm out for the night.

No sorry I'm out for the night.

I just meant in general. I have an i wiring harness, but I'd have to double check that all the connectors are there. It came off of Rob's old M20 (El Gato Liso) so I wouldn't be surprised if something was missing lol

Sorry I haven't had a chance to take a look yet. If you want to come by this weekend you can take a look at it.

Yup. Its what I did to swap an entire i engine in my e. I had an 85 so the same C101 rectangular connector as you. Not sure why you aren't tuning the "e" computer? If you swap computers the stock "e" block flywheel injector pickup won't be read by the "i" computer and various other sensors, like the 7th injector etc...? The crank position sensor on the "i" engine is on the harmonic damper as well.

Rudy has a 2.7 "i" engine, not sure how his is configured whether he swapped flywheels and damper. (e engine is heavy dual mass flywheel).

If you get this sorted out I have a tuned "e" computer from MarkD. Granted its not tuned for 2.7L but it may be a good start for you, if you're interested in it.

Just to add a note to anyone looking into this, I'd recommend not using the E front damper, not only because of the lack of a trigger wheel, but the fact that the weight and harmonics may not be ideally suited a higher revving engine may cause issues down the road, especially if the motor gets used hard.

My motor was, and to keep things simple, a 325i with 2.7 internals. Everything else on the outside was from the 325i, including harness, sensors, damper, flywheel, etc etc.

I've got an 325e engine that's going in the garbage soon. FYI.

Tear it apart and keep the connecting rods before you do. You should be able to sell them pretty easily as the M20B28 strokers are becoming increasingly popular and part of the puzzle is those rods.

+1. If I had an M52 crank at the time, I most definitely would have tried going with that route instead of the 2.7.

LS1,3 is pretty much bolt in now days. kits are available and 400bhp all day long.

Mmmm hmmmm....

... and 60 lbs more total extra weight with a T56 transmission. Thats pretty impressive considering you're getting an aluminum V8 plus one of the strongest transmissions evar. The BorgWarner T56 was a tank in my Camaro. (LT1).

An LS1 engine with 5.3L truck heads, LSx intake, 90mm TB, mid length headers and no cats will give you over 460 RWHP. 426 ci can be made resleeving those motors and IF you could manage long tubes you could get 550RWHP and the same in torque out of that engine.

I had a buddy who punished a 426 resleeved LS1 for about 5 years solid in a C5 and it never let him down. Unfortunately he sold it to a guy who killed himself in it on the 427 splitting the C5 in half. I drove that car, it was insane.
