High school?

Buy a cheap dell with lots of coverage.

(p.s. no HS age kid needs a 800$ laptop)

No HS kids needs a laptop lol. Kids usually get them stolen =\

I convinced the parents not to buy a MacBook pro that she wanted for that reason. Just wanted to know if anyone saw a good deal this weekend on something.

This one seems really nice for the price. If you are going to get something, try n stay away from HP. Heard a lot of bad reviews lately on their laptops.

I think this is a pretty good deal if you are looking for a slim almost ultra-portable laptop! Without the Ultra-Portable Price tag ($1000+)

As part of the Dell Small Biz Black Friday Sale, there's a $668 ($150 off until 12/1) Vostro V131 laptop with a Core i5 Processor.

If you add the RedFlagDeals.com exclusive coupon (V6XXF57V5NJ7T$, valid until Nov.28) good for 10% off Small Business sytems (Vostros, Latitudes, and Optiplex).
This brings the total down to $601.20 +tax.

While I think that is a decent deal, it is an older processor from 2010, the new Sandybridge i3 2xxx & i5 2xxx outperform it by a noticeable margin and has better battery life.

QX410 or QX411

410 was last years model, I think its going for around $500 right now. Pretty sweet laptop. The 411 (might be 412) is the upgrade one with a new processor/vid card, but its more pricey.

Love this laptop, was going to buy one but then decided I dont need a laptop. The keyboard is pretty sweet and has a nice feel to it... Though to be fair as everyone here has said; YOU DONT NEED A LAPTOP for high school; UNLESS she has no computer at home...

So, if thats the case and shes in grade 12 and going to uni/col, then get something decent that will last. I recommend a Sony because say what you may about Sony, their products are superior in build quality to the acers, toshitsbas, dells that are out there.

I just picked up an ACER 14" with 6gb ram and 500gb harddrive for 299.99 at the VIP sale they had at futureshop on thursday.

Here's the laptop listed at regular price.

High school use I say nothing over $400. Soon you'll start seeing the big box stores budling software with the computers.

ASUS laptops and TOSHIBA laptops are the best performing laptops next to MACs

dell.... hp... dont know how to make laptops.

For general use, like for high school, I don't see anything wrong with any of the big box store laptops. They're fairly inexpensive particularly when they go on sale. I've had a couple of Dells and I have to say they're quite reliable. No, they're not the fanciest, sturdiest or coolest laptops around but they're very decent. I've had a Lenovo for a little over a year and already had the motherboard crap out on me.

^^^ YMMV....

I had a '99 323i with a dead tranny with 80K km's on it. Does it mean they all die at that mileage? No...

If we wanna talk horror stories - I got all kinds with Dell...

Hey Sickbimmer,

I've been working as a IT developer for years and have also helped run a computer store for my friend fixing all types of computers.

Stay away from: HP(conpaq), Dell, <<-high repairs
Toshiba was great years ago, but they changed their strategy to go for high volume sales and they stink now.

Consider: Gateway(same as Acer, Emachinces) << best bang for your dollars and are good for all needs of a high school kids. Maybe not for hard core gamers but can work.

Lenovo(old IBM): These are rock solid but are not flashy. May not work for a high school.

something good under $400 will be hard to get and might have to be a HP.

Consider these one

Thanks for the advice guys. Turns out the parents went with this (HP). Nice feel with the aluminum body. Not my first choice though. Oh well. I tried.:)
