View Full Version : More S54 swap mayhem: Sia's E28.

By now, most of you have seen ZiMMie's OEM-clean S54B32 (E46 M3 for those who don't study engine codes daily) powered E36 M-Tech. Mike, the one-man wrenching show here at Stance Factory, built this car himself and it runs on the factory DME. It's driven hard and put away hot, daily:

http://img233.imageshack.us/img233/9119/img0690na.jpg

He hates when I show off his car.

There has been a good deal of internet fame generated by this car, and Sia (ALPINA MAN) was unable to miss it. Sia is a true BMW lover, with an extensive and enviable collection of classic BMW (and Alpina!) models. One of his more low-key rides is this absolutely mint 1983 525i Euro:

http://www.stancefactory.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/11012011705.jpg

http://www.stancefactory.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/11012011709.jpg

Sia decided that his E28 needed more than the M30B25 that BMW installed almost 20 years ago:

http://www.stancefactory.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/11012011710.jpg

The common engine conversions for this chassis include both larger M30 and newer generation M50-variant motors right up to the S50B32 Euro. But these are not unique enough for Sia, who has a taste for the rare. He wants something to really make a BMW enthusiast stand up and take notice. Enter the S54B32:

http://www.stancefactory.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/11012011703.jpg

With 343+hp (we'll be doing a few tricks to raise that factory figure), this should be more than enough for the relatively lightweight base-model E28 chassis. As that shot shows, Mike is already prepping the clean motor with all the proper maintenance before it's shoehorned in (Vanos bolts, valve adjustment, an assortment of gaskets, etc etc). Oh yeah, and of course an E46 M3 6-speed transmission is patiently waiting to be bolted on also.

I'll be updating this thread as we go along, stay tuned. :)

Just out of curiosity how much does an S54 swap on an E36 go for, motor, tranny, all the labour, tuning, etc?

All the credit should be reflected to Mike and Jay the owners of Stance Factory and their great work and enthusiast nature. I have to admit that I am a lucky guy to get to know Mike and Jay over the years and have them as a friend.

What are your plans for the front subframe? IIRC, and this is just something I'm remembering from an old thread somewhere (probably mye28), but I read that the s54 won't fit in an e28 without custom subframe / relocated steering rack...

This is not a how to / DIY thread.....
If you are looking for step by step and details you are in the wrong place, you'll have to do the research / figure it out yourself.

I'm pretty sure Mike plans to use the Stock DME, like he did on his car...

Not that I know of, this is not a swap that you will be spoon fed info on, like s50/2 or m50/2 swaps. It's a more recent swap, with not alot of documentation out there, most of the people that have figured it out are keeping some of the details a secret.

Hey guys, how about some update with pics. I was at Stance last Thursday, Mike and Jay showed me the progress of the swap. The maintenance work and new headers were installed and completed on the S54 and I noticed that the engine, tranny, and all the related wiring were disconnected and taking out of my car and there was a big empty space under the hood and under the car.
I am looking forward to see that place filed with the powerful S54 and the 6 speed tranny. Also Mike mentioned that my 3:73 Diff arrived and he is working on exhaust system as well.
I guess I should stop and let the boys do the rest of the talking.

Excuse the blurry shot:

She's done.

A group of us met at the shop on a gray Sunday afternoon to mark the occasion. Mike buttoned up the last details and we took her on her first drive - almost 100km away in Oakville for Randy's dyno day (http://maxbimmer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=149486).

How does it drive? Very hard to describe. Most (or many) of us know what an E46 M3 feels like. A select few have tried the S54 in other factory platforms (Z3, Z4) and felt differences, some subtle others significant. An even smaller handful have piloted swaps, like Mike's E36. But this one? Totally different story. The sheer lunacy of staring at an early 80's era dashboard while wiggling the rear end through 3 gears and 8200rpm of powerband is surreal. And the sound is like no other S54 out there, thanks to the one-off all-TIG stainless steel exhaust incorporating custom fabricated headers, dual 2.25" piping merging to a single 3.5" collector and a straight-through muffler.

Of course, we need far more pics, videos, and commentary on this car. But we're closing up shop to check out the Blue Ridge Parkway tonight, returning on the weekend. We'll do our best to share the final product that we're so proud of once we're back. For now, here's a shot on the dyno as well of a copy of the results. See you guys next week!

I received a call yesterday from Jay that my car will be ready for pick up. I have to admit that I felt like I am picking up a brand spanking new car, it felt that way to me.

Sure enough my baby was ready; Mike was going over it to make sure every thing would be 100%.

When they took my car out side the shop I couldn’t believe that Stance Factory did everything to the last bolts and nuts to make sure that what they promised was delivered on budget and on time and in deed they did. These two guys Jay and Mike are the most professional, knowledgeable, friendly and most resourceful people that I have came across and I whish them the best and prosperous future, because they earned it and deserve it.

Simply put they made my dream come true. Again thank you for your hard work Stance Factory, Job Well Done.*th-up*

Just an update as how reliable this swap was and the performance point of view driving it to vintage and at RTT 2012.

Driving down to vintage, we were 4 cars, (2) M5s, (1) 525i-S54 and 1M coupe. We were cursing about average 75 to 85 miles/h and no problem and few times I had it north of 140 m/h to just test the stability and braking among other things checking the A/C which was on most of the time (works great), and gages, cluster, and other electrical and electronic which all works as I hoped it would. At the same time, we were driving on the twisty back reads of Smoky Mountains which was great testing ground for suspension and power shake down that was performed flawlessly. On the other hand, I had my eye on the oil level till the end of the trip, and it was fine, so as the 6 speed operation, shifting gears just feels like butter and as for the rear end 3:73 combination with 6 speeds and the S54 gives you the feeling of unlimited pull. *uzi*

Over all the swap was successful and performance is out standing and extremely pleasurable and highly addictive. Thanks to Stance Factory!*th-up*

ALPINA MAN

fcplm, People who go to this extend of modification doesn’t care about GAS consumption or at least I don’t.

But to satisfy some hungr and curiosity, every time that Mario’s e28 M5 and Mark’s e28 M5 needed gas and stopped for refueling, I still had a shy of half gas thank left.

Let me try and answer this as I was on the RTT trip the entire time.

Sia drove the car hard so it is hard to tell how good it could actually do. What I do know is even with him doing high speed runs (not all of us did), he constantly put 10-15L less fuel in his car at fill-ups then we did.

I would guess he is getting somewhere > 30MPG. The engine with all its new technology really doesn't have to work all that hard to push that old light euro body E28 down the road. With the 6 speed gearbox he put in, I bet the mileage is even better then it would be otherwise.

Again though, its really hard to tell... We were not driving for economy..

I had a chance to drive Sia's E28 S54 last weekend and was very impressed. The guys at Stancefactory sure have swaps down to a fine art. Everything in the car works the way it did back in '83 when it rolled off the assembly line. You'd never know it had such a beast lurking under the hood until you get on the loud-pedal. I even love how they integrated the "Sport" button in the console keeping the installation very clean. IMO, Sia needs a 4.10:1 diff to really wake this thing up (but i'm biased). The suspension feels pretty tired too, maybe a new set of coilovers & sway bars will give more confidence when throwing it into corners. Plenty of grip from the Michelin PSS tires though. The exhaust sound is very reminiscent of my E30... setting of car alarms driving down the street. Great job guys!

ALPINA MAN
06-13-2012, 07:43 PM
It was a good time Randy, with four people and trunk full of stuff from my trip it wasn’t a bad ride eh… also the existing suspension combination is Billy sport, eiboch spring and suspension techniques sway bars (25k on them), but I guess with added power and larger wheels and tires it sure feels a bit softer than your e46 beast for sure, I will take your suggestion and see what is out there interims of coil over and may be even thicker sway bars.
Good call Randy, You are the third person who told me that, I should add that Jay and Mike said the same thing, but I wanted to try it on my trip to RTT so I can figure out what else can be improved. In addition you guys track your car in every chance you get *th-up*, but unfurtunatly I haven’t got a chance to do that lately because of the congested schedule and work commitment, one day soon though.

Not yet, but It’s almost ready and should roll on them next week, waiting for the new set of calipers for the rear wheels, the rear calipers that were originally sent, were too close to the wheels (4 pistons) so since they are made to order, Sam was nice enough to make new ones (4 pistons) and replace them and we are expecting them to arrive beginning of this week.

Nice numbers Sia! Was that SAE or STD? Smoothing?

This is just a quick reference about SAE and TSD.

Quote:

“(SAE:
"SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers), USA. Power is corrected to reference conditions of 29.23 InHg (99 kPa) of dry air and 77 F (25°C). This SAE standard requires a correction for friction torque.

STD:
STD is Another power correction standard determined by the SAE. Power is corrected to reference conditions of 29.92 InHg (103.3 kPa) of dry air and 60 F (15.5°C). Because the reference conditions include higher pressure and cooler air than the SAE standard, these corrected power numbers will always be about 4 % higher than the SAE power numbers. Friction torque is handled in the same way as in the SAE standard."

Here is some quick math (using assumptions and round numbers):

STD:
Air Temperature: 60F
Absolute Pressure: 29.92 inches Hg
Relative Humidity: 0%

Relative Horsepower : 104.8%
Air Density: 1.223kg/m3
Relative Air Density: 99.8%
Density Altitude: 67feet
Virtual Temperature: 60F
Vapor Pressure: 0 inches Hg
Dyno Correction Factor: .955

SAE:
Air Temperature: 77F
Absolute Pressure: 29.23 inches Hg
Relative Humidity: 0%

The original stock 525i weigh about 2800 Lbs., but since I upgraded the brakes and wheels and some other goodies such as sport manual lather interior instead of original cloth interior etc…, so I believe the weight this car is around 2900 or slightly over but still under 3000 Lbs..

I can not tell you how much fun it is to drive this car, it feels like a go cart in triple dose of steroids.

Excellent dyno results AlpinaMan!

I heard there was a lot of interest and spectators at the Kitchener show when the 525 was on the rollers........if you know what I mean.

Shark attack
The combination of an old-skool shark-nose Five and a new-age powertrain like the E46 M3’s hallowed 3.2-litre S54 is something we’ve never seen before. Until now…

Thank you. I just noticed that it was one year to the day ago that Sia dropped his car off and we started this thread.

A 1 year turnaround from inception to PBMW cover isn't bad.

It's been a while since I have owned a BMW, but am still a regular lurker around here. I will one day be back behind the wheel of one of these great cars.

Just wanted to say that bar none, by far this is my favourite swap I've ever seen. Sia, this car is absolutely gorgeous. I'm sure you enjoy every time you get behind the wheel!

Also, huge props to the guys at the Stance Factory, for obviously doing an amazing job, and from what I've read, making this engine feel like it was meant for the E28!

Firs of all thank you all for your kind comments towards this built. Having driven the e28 S54 last summer and also taking it to the 10 days of continues drive on the Smoky Mountains http://rollingthetwisties.com/, I can say that this shark nose was built though and excided everyone’s expectation including myself.*th-up**th-up**love*supper:cool:

Thank you for your recognition, uniqueness is contiguous, People are doing this every day and is nothing the we haven’t heard before, but only one stands out that took the challenge and difficulties to a higher level and higher standard in order to create something that is unexpected.
