Hey guys, as you can see am new to the forum, I just got my E30, finally found the perfect E30 that i wanted, has 180,000 4 door 325i black clean shell! anywho am really happy that i finally found it after a good search, so i finalized everything, and now am looking for an Insurance Company here ottawa, canada, so i started calling and it seems that almost no company insures a E30, apparently its "too old", Bel-Air wont touch it, and every other insurer are quoting me 4k-6k premiums, the cheapest one way quote i got was $3600, i currently drive a VW jetta its a 07 2.0 and am paying 120$ a month
my driving record is flawless, am 22, with literally nothing on my file not even a parking ticket, ive been driving for about 4 years! my main question and reason for the post, is to find out who are u guys insured with and how much are you paying! because with all honesty i might end up selling the car and go for a E36 insurance is alot cheaper!

Any advice possibly referrals will help, i really dont want to sell this car i love my e30

Dude... you are screwed... you are 22 and still in the "death bracket"... In fact I am surprised you even got $120 on the Jetta! Are you listed under someone else or on your own?

Shop around... or wait til you are 28 years old! :p

Are you looking to get collision on your insurance plan? When I was looking a lot of companies told me the same thing that the car is too old. However once I said I just wanted liability and no collision, fire, theft etc. Then my insurer (td Meloche mennox ) were fine to insure it. I am currently paying about 900 per year with year with full coverage and I'm the same age as you with similar driving history from what I read.

^ This. I go through Meloche Monnex. I pay $120 a month with 1 car accident and I'm 21. Since I am a Carleton student I get their crazy deals.

LOL well said.

Here what I did.

1) get appraisal done
2) call AVIVA and tell them you have a appraisal done so you can insure it properly

Actually "Hockeyfan" in this forum can set u up*th-up*

Look in my blog you will see what I did and the appraisal company I used.(very important the insurance will work with the real appraisers ONLY)

Good stuff dude. They're a little more unknown, but I've yet to find better rates.

I seriously gotta try TD Insurance ...apparently they also offer a discount for OCADU students as well

MaxBell

Do it, they just dropped my rate to $88/month yesterday for the E30, since the accident dropped off my record and I agreed to move my house insurance over to them.

i'm with the personal insurance and the e30 is 130/month. although i should call because i turn 25 in 2 days and just got married. apparently marriage makes insurance go down since you're not trying to impress anyone anymore?

Try Desjardins!
Mine's $130/month for my E30.
It has no collision but I paid $300 for mine and I had an appraisal done at $100 for insurance! ;D

I'd rather pay more in insurance than give a future ex-wife half my shit.

Just sayin'.

I just got an online quote from TD auto insurance, quoted $170/month.. It's way cheaper than what I'm paying to desjardins ($230)..But I haven't had an experience switching from one to another while the policy is active. How does it work? Do I have to cancel the desjardins first then start a new policy with TD? or would TD take care of switching process?

karmatose
10-19-2011, 09:50 PM
Call your current insurance company and cancel. They'll normally "turn off" your policy on the day that you pay next or specify a day you want it to end. After that, call the new company and tell them to start your new policy on the day that your current one ends.

HOWEVER! Call TD first and see how accurate that quote is. I've had an experience where the online quote wasn't exactly reflecting reality (by just a few dollars, but still).

MaxBell

+1 on the actual quote. Also, make sure you were talking to Meloche Monnex and not just TD Insurance.

I got an online quote of under $100 online from Desjardins (logged into my account which claims to be accurate) and after I bought the vehicle (my SUV, not my E30) it ended up being $160....not impressed but...WHATEVER!

Maybe I should switch! :P

Ya, my e30 is quite low in comparison to other cars as well -- early vs late model have any effect?

I was in Waskaganish Quebec for 3 years with desjardens and the last year I was with them I was paying 280 for that year. The difference is that in Ontario the insurance company needs to carry the liability... In quebec your liability is covered under your yearly registration that is $120 or so.

We get it up the A hole here in Ontario that's for sure.

Bumping this thread up as a warning to others. I'm old (27 lol), have a nearly perfect record and was paying a pittance to insure my two cars previously (G35 Coupe and Civic), but my insurance company refuses to insure my E30. I'm going to try Meloche Monnex and see what they're willing to do for me.

Edit: I used their online quote thing, price was decent, but significantly more expensive than what I'd be paying for an E36 (118/mth vs 88/mth)

I'm insured through the personal. My e30 was costing about 85-90 i think. i didnt' do collision though, just liability. They have a lot of different discounts too for different organizations you belong to. I currently have an engineer discount that save me a crap-ton of money. i can't remember if it was through IEEE or OSPE

I pay $175/mo for my 91 through Gore Mutual, liability only. I was with Aviva but their customer service is shit.

I'm going to call Meloche Monnex and The Personal to see what they can do for me.

EDIT:

Called The Personal. I don't apply but fortunately my wife is a member of one of the groups they insure. Unfortunately my car is apparently not on file with Insurance Bureau of Canada. Not sure how I am currently insured... In order to get it on file I need the importation documentation. Anyone know how to go about getting that?

Meloche Monnex won't insure me because I don't belong to any other the groups they insure. Their regular person alternate company wont insure me because my VIN isn't in the IBC database.

WTF, I didn't have any trouble getting with my current company last year. Looks like I'll be making a call to the Bureau tomorrow.

Turns out my VIN is on the exceptions List at the IBC. Looks like the people I talked to are just stupid and can't do their job.

The Personal quoted me $219/mo.

I remember now why I ****ing hate dealing with insurance companies.

I blind copied about 50 insurance brokers in my area with my information. Got a number of responses back. I'm getting down to about $120-$130. Dominion of Canada and Wawanesa are the lowest of the bunch.

Being as we're in the same area, would you mind forwarding your list of brokers? I'd love to do similar. I'm getting hosed right now and need to shop around before my renewal.

I pay about 100.00/mth from CAA ins. basic coverage; but depends on location and age as well.

I was quoted 1907.00/yr or 158.91/mo for a 97 325c and 2193.00 or 182.75/mo for an 86 325i by my broker for liability only... add 300.00 to each to include comp/fire/theft. I have been driving for 28yrs with a clean record talk about getting shafted here in T. I gotta shop around some more and see if I can find a better deal. Not sure who he was getting "the best deal he could find" from...
fwiw he said the newer car was cheaper because it had airbags and thus a lower personal injury liability claim rating.
