I still have the diff if anyone is interested. The diff has new seals and new redline oil. Orginally I was selling it for $850, but I am willing to let it go for as low as $500. Thanks.

I have a differential from a 96 318ti. From what I have been told you would have to swap the cover from your old one, and then it would bolt up. You are welcome to take a look at it. It was taken out at 110km. If you have a picture of your old one I could tell you for sure if it will fit or not.

give me a call at 416-995-7570 if you want to look at it.

doesn't the 'ti" use the E30 differential? and not the regular E36?

if u wanna calculate your top speed after the change http://www.koalamotorsport.com/services/bmw_differentials.htm

Where did you originally get this Diff from, what is it off of or who made it?

I bought it of Charly's (bimmersport) friend. It is off a 328 and is orginal BMW diff. Thanks.

whats the difference with a 328 diff and a M3 diff, i though its the same!

it has a different gear ratio, and the best part, its limited slip, good for doing donuts.

So then what's the best deal you can give me for the Diff shipped to 95404, California?

Or would that be too crazy of a gear ratio for a 1993 325is?

Damn, I would be all over this if it was the 3.38 diff from the auto M3

So wait can someone clear this up...is it better to have a lower number differential, or a higher number differential? i.e. 2.91 or 3.91?

Soldo
04-30-2003, 09:03 PM
depends what you want, if you want acceleration, then a HIGHER number is better, but top speed is sacrificed, and on a LOWER number differential its the other way around, accel is sacrificed but top speed benefits!!
i have it right, RIGHT?!?!
(sometimes i get it confused, but i'm pretty sure on this!)

Soldomatic, yes you got it right. I was confusing it too untill I had to look for the diff.

anyway 3.91 is not recomended for any manual BMW. It is just to high. But if you like shifting every second, and brute acelelration and do not drive more than 200km/h on the highway you can get it.

on of the best OEM diff for 3 series is 3.38 from 96- auto m3.

E36 m3 came with:
95 - 5spd (3.15) auto and LTW (3.23)
96-up 5spd (3.23) auto (3.38)

3.91 came out of automatic 325/328

5spd 318i and ti comes with 3.45 diff, so 3.91 would be a perfect diff for 318, but I'm not sure about fitment.

P.S. on automatic 318 3.91 diff will actually decrease your acceleration.

Ahh, you have a 3.15 I think. So a 3.91 is too much. 3.38 would be perfect, that comes from the auto M3.

SickFinga

yep mkgino, you are right, he has 3.15

318iS, Ti Manual Transmission 3.45
318iS, Ti, Automatic Trans 4.44
325 Manual Transmission 3.15
328 Manual Transmission 2.93
325/328 Automatic Transmission 3.91
M3 3.0 3.15
M3 3.2 , Auto and Lightweight 3.23

mkgino, 3.38 will be perfect for you, but i think it is overpriced.
When I was looking for the diff, cheapest 3.38 we found for 1500 shipped to Canada from Cali.
I got my 3.23 for 900 shipped.

I have been looking for the 3.38 also, found one for $800 usd! Guy lives in pittsburg. I want it so bad but I kinda cant trust buying something that expensive without looking for it. I would meet him halfway, but when I do, I wouldnt be able to tell if it is in good condition or not! So I think I may go for the 3.23 soon, because they go for much cheaper than the 3.38

with 4.44 diff you will hit rev limiter in 5th gear before you will finish 1/4mile
so it is a not good idea.

For you 3.38 is the way to go, but it is too expensive, so look for 3.23 diff.

to count by how much your rpms will increase at certain speed do this.

divide the old rpm by the old ratio and multiply by the new ratio to get the new rpm.
ie.
lets say in 5th gear at 4000rpms you fo 120km/h
4000rpm / 2.91 * 3.38 = 4646
so with the new diff you will be traveling 120km/h at 4646 rpms.

let's try changing 2.91 to 4.44
4000/2.91 * 4.44 = 6103rpms
:D so you will be almost redlining at 120km/h
