I just took the M50 out of my parts car but before it came out it made a whining sound. The sound was actually very similar to a supercharger.

Any ideas?

it could be the alternator bearing.

Mine was caused by the belt tensioner pulley. Blew up within a week. Once it does, you lose power to your water pump, alternator and p/s.

Could just be low power steering fluid as well.

My tensioner pulley was making that noise too. If you have a mechanical tensioner instead of the hydraulic one the pulley can be harder to find. I will post up the part number and a pic of the one I used when I get home (it's not listed for BMWs but it is the same pulley).

The part number of the pulley I found is 49024 (goodyear number). Looks like this:

When searching for the replacement, every part store i checked had the pictured lower pulley listed as the tensioner pulley. The top pulley was what came off my car.

Hope it helps.

Yeah, if you want to replace the whole tensioner.
