Hi folks,

Looking at a '98 M3 sedan, 115k, for ~$14.5k

In speaking with the owner, he said no accidents.
Ok, so he doesnt know of any, right?
I just did a carproof, and it has the following:
Claim Date: 2004-07-08
Type of Claim: COLLISION
Amount Paid: 8271.72
Nature of Payment: REPAIRS

so... in 2004, an $8k paid by ICBC accident is what on an M3? a super nasty crash, or a bumper, fender, headlight cluster, front spoiler, and some paint?

Do any of you know fo a way that I can get details on that accident?

I was planning on taking a ferry to see the car this weekend, but this puts the red flags up ya know?

Should i still go test drive it, and get it inspected? or just move on?

Advice would be appreciated!

This is the car, if anyone recognizes it...

Wow $14 grand for an '98 ///M3 seems a bit pricey to me. And 8 grand in damages? That doesn't sound like a little fender bender to me. It must have been something serious.
I would pass on this car and keep looking.

i dunno man, 14k seems ... ok... for a car with 115,xxx KM's on it to me. Sorry, i guess i shoulda mentioned that it is a sedan with a 5spd (bonus)

Ya, my gut is saying pass on this car too.

Most insurance estimates are WAY overpriced. If they say $8K, it was more like 2K! Best thing to do is bring it to a good BODY shop for inspection.

I was gonna take it to a bmw specialist, Nixon Automotive.

I'm just thinking i'll pass, unless ya'll can convince me otherwise.

Anyone else have an opinion on this?

Too much for a car with that accident history. You can probably find a nice e34 M5 for the same or less in BC, if you are interested in one of those.

i agree. id walk away

you are in bc. you have a plethora of jdm euro m3's available to you for a good 3-4k less than that guy is asking.

I'm not interested in an M5, as they seem like they would simply be too hard on fuel.
There sure are some sweet ones available though.

Where you seeing all these euro M3's about SiR? Don't they generally have poor maintenance levels?
I'm specifically looking for an E36 M3 Sedan with a 5speed.

bump for a bit of an update.

The owner emailed me back, and has dropped the price to $12.5k.

Should i get it inspected for a few hundred bucks? if it is up to snuff after the inspection, would paying $11k seem a decent value?

... I dont have enough experience to know why folks walk away from cars that have accidents on them. What're the issues that result, even after it's been repaired properly?

The only other two cars i've found in canada that are sedans with a 5sp are:
185k for $15.9k (alberta)
51k for $20.9k (bc)
both no accidents, which is nice... both black on black sedans, with 5spds.

If he dropped it that much.. i think he is hiding something... most people that own a decent car wont drop the price unless they know they cant sell it for that price, either because he needs the money or because he over valued the car hoping to get more, or because no one is buying it because there is something wrong with it... but y dont u just take a road trip to cali n get a clean m3 with no winter time on it, i heard u can get a 1995 or 1996 one from the states n it only takes 45 mins to import it :) since its 15 years old...

I'd really like to avoid importation.

The owner said he checked all the panels, and VIN's match (not sure of hood and trunk atm though) so 4 doors, all fenders, etc.

He's completely willing to have it taken to a BMW specialist, locally, which would cost me around $250 including a compression test.

I'm just not sure if this would be a complete waste of time.

I dont know what kind of damage can cost $8k on a 6 year old M3 that doesnt warrant replacement of fenders or doors. Maybe a pole collision front center?
