Ever since the 80s, BMW’s M division has given birth to some of the most driver-dedicated cars in the world. The best proof is brought by the M division’s core model, the M3, which turns 25 this year.
However, since the original E30 M3 was born, the world’s cars have received more and more safety and comfort features that have determined vehicles to become heavier and more expensive, with BMW M models obviously abiding this unwritten rule. So it’s likely that you’ll own a more inertial M car later in your life.
BMW’s M comes to solve this issues, with the solution also being the perfect tribute to the E30 M3 (actually, the list of reasons for what we are about to report is literally infinite, but we’ll stop here).
The company will launch the highly anticipated M version of the BMW 1 Series Coupe. It looks like our prayers have been heard. The automotive producer promises that the car will be focused on “the essentials - the fascination of driving”, adding that it will also “reflect a love of detail”.
M Gmbh’s official magazine, M-Power, published an interview with Dr. Kay Segler, the head of the division, talking about the model, also revealing a teaser video and a set of pictures of the car. You can read the interview in the attached pdf file.
As expected, the vehicle won’t be badged as an M1, due to the fact that the name means something else in M language (the original M1 was a racing-derived car co-produced with Lamborghini in the late 70s).
The exact details of the BMW 1 Series M Coupe will be published by Christmas, with the first vehicles are scheduled to be delivered in the first half of next year.
As we previously reported the vehicle will use a beefed-up version of the 135i’s 306 hp engine, which will be offered with both a six speed manual transmission and a seven speed automatic one. The power will be sent to the rear wheels via an M differential, with the car hitting 62 mph in 4.5 seconds and offering an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph. All the areas of the vehicle will be upgraded, including the handling and the braking.
I want this car to follow the same design mentality of the superleggera and scuderia cars, light weight, no excess, barebones, raw.

I am actually excited to see the details of this car and maybe, hopefully, one day drive it.

This has a serious potential to be faster than an M3 E92 but if this car's price is going to be cheaper, I doubt they'd shoot the M3 in the foot. Same way with the Aston Vantage being lighter and not faster than the DB9/DBS...

I've read that it matches the M3's time on the Nurburgring!
