water pump problem

anybody experienced the waterpump impeller seperating from the pump unit and disappearing into the engine somewhere? i just bought a 1992 325is and was overheating, i replaced the water pump and couldnt find the impeller in the water pump cavity or passage.
although it is running ok now and coolant is circulating could this cause any damage? :confused:

because they are plastic most likely it became so brittle that it disintegrated. not much you can do in any case if it didn't. They are common for breaking. Find yourself one with a metal impeller.
