I'm looking at buying a used BMW, my first bimmer ever. And have been reading up online like crazy trying to figure what to do and for what kind of money. I would ideally not like to spend more than $10,000 and there are lots of 325's available for that much. If I were to think about saving up a bit more, maybe going to a budget of $12-13,000 I could get into a 328 I think. So the question is, would I be better off starting with the much cheaper car and building up engine to try and match performance of 328, or should I just try and find a cheap 328?

Also, I have seen some wildly different numbers for 0-60 times for 328s and 325s. Was there actually a performance change from 1996 to 1997?

thanks!

Go for the 328i. why? cause it has a better engine.
my 2 cents.. 2.8L is better/faster than 2.5L

The 325's are easier and cheaper to tune, and get the biggest gains (thanks to OBD1).
The 328's will probably give you less problems however since they're much newer cars, but if you're on a budget or want to mod your car out, maybe it's better to start with a less expensive car.

without going to turbos, supercharging or nitrous, how much can I can get out of simply modded 325 engine? For example with new ECU, exhaust, and intake.

also, what exactly is OBD1 or 2?

thanks.

Where are you finding these $12-13,000 328's?

For that cash, definately go 325. You can make a 325 easily faster then a 328 with a few mods.

For a young guy --

Reliabilty -- get one with as clean a bill of health as you can find, then mod.

Good luck...

Well, look at these two AA tuning charts...

This one, a 325i vs. a 325i with CAI, exhaust and chip (http://www.aatuning.com/dyno/94-325i%20vs%20AAChip%20Exh%20CAI.asp)

And this one, a 328i vs. a 328i with CAI, software and an M3 exhaust (http://www.aatuning.com/dyno/96-328i%20vs%2096-328i%20AA%20Chip%20M3%20Muffler.asp)

Now, the 325 has more horsepower, but the 328 still has more torque (and it starts a lot earlier). Here is where the difference lies, the 325i has a 3.15:1 diff while the 328i has a 2.93:1 diff.

If it was a straight line race between the two, I think the 328 would still win, but very slightly (due to the lower end torque). If you were to put the same m3 cams in both cars, the 325 would win. The OBD-1 of the 325 would have a way easier time using the cams to it's fullest.

None of what I said can be backed up with real world examples though (yet), this is just me racing the two cars in my head with dyno sheets......

Also, if I had a 325i, and has access to a garage (which I do), i'd do the AA 2.9L stoker kit without even thinking twice....

Also, with such a small budget for a three series, I wouldn't even consider a 328....try really hard to find a decent 325 with low km's that has been very well maintained and is in good shape. Don't buy a lemon, the maintenence/repair bills will screw you later on....
