I'd say to not get one older then 91.....
In 91 they started putting the 2.5L M50 in them with is so much better then whatever SOHC 12v motor they were using before (m30?), plus you get an extra few horsepower too (pre-91 168hp, 91 and newer, 189hp).

I drive an 89 525i... its slow off the line but great on the highway or over 3000RPM. Tops out at around 200km/hr, gas tank is huge.. Id say its the perfect commuter car. Check out www.bmwe34.net for everything you ever wanted to know about the car. Known problems include contral arms, thrust arms, and rust under the trim on the door. Try to get the service history on the car because it is easy to get the kms reprogrammed and CARFAX it to be safe. If the UVIP verifies its a one owner Id say offer the guy $5500 or $6000 and drive it away. Be prepared to spend up to $1000 on little things though because there is always some small crap that needs fixing. Check out how it idles, on cold starts it way jump around a bit... but the engine is bullet-proof and the tranny is incredible.
