Good thing I dont have an E46.

Rumor has it if your door is frozen, or the locking mechanism on your E36 hold the handle up and it will warm up and un-freeze.

not sure if every e36 has this but the 318 i had had this if you park get out of your car and forgot to close one of your windows.... put the key in the drivers lock and i think your turn it right (might be left) and hold it and any of your windows will close.

so you know when you run the climate control in your car you can choose for air to be either circulated from within the vehicle or taken from outside. my e46 has an automatic setting that when the car is taking air from the outside and there is a bad smell, it will detect it and automatically start circulating air that is within the car rather than taking it from outside so that you don't smell the stench.

I saw this on the forum. If you press the "auto" and the rear window defroster buttons on the climate control unit both at the same time the display will go into a test mode in which you can see many parameters like speed, rpm, outside temp, battery voltage, etc... You can navigate the parameters with the keys that control fan speed and get out of the test mode with the same combination of buttons

I still smell the stench in my e46 and e90. Or maybe it catches most and I'm only smelling a small portion of them. I don't know how it could detect whether something smells good or not.

that window up option for the e36 is awesome, ive posted a couple threads on bf.c about retrofiting it my early model e36 but no solid information. the lock deice is nice but on short trips it sucks ( impretty sure my car doesnt have the keyless entry option 92) so i have to use the key to lock and unlock it. if i use lock de ice with handle it melts it, i can see the water coming up, but on short trips when its cold it freezes back up so i gotta heat it again to lock it. or if im running in and out i gotta heat and it again coming out

Not sure if this is just for the e9x models, but that "Rest" button can be pressed after the car is shut off and will circulate warm air in the cabin for 15 mintues after you leave and lock the car -- great for times when you are making a relatively quick errand, the car's interior will be warm when you return! (too bad I don't drive it in the winter to matter... lol)

The earlier models don't have that feature but you can have the dealer enabled the option to use your HVAC system when the engine is off.

I should have said yes to it, when I was getting it all programmed.

Lol, I didn't make this up. I read here at maxbimmer, someone who apparently worked for BMW posted a few years ago. I thought it was BS too but I tried back when I had a 318i E36 and it works, you gotta make sure you press both buttons at exactly the same time though. Remember it's the lowest buttons on the left and right side of the climate control, that would be the "auto" and the rear defroster

I've heard that this was an E34 option as well (Euro-only?), so it's probably available on several different chassis. I kinda stumbled across it when I was trying to find out why my aux water pump is bypassed. Maybe someone can verify? I can't remember what the option was called.

I'm not exactly sure but I think the thing you're thinking of was that you could set up through the OBC that it would turn on the fan every 15 minutes or so to keep the temperature either hot or cold or something along those lines. There's a thread about all the things that the e34 can do in the Bf.c e34 section but I can't find it right now.

My E39 has the rest feature. As long as the outside temp is below 7 Celsius (or something like that) and the engine is suitably warm, and there is a sufficient charge in the battery it runs a small electric aux water pump and a fan to keep the car warm.

With some e36 models you can set the digital mileage to read your rpm, speed and a few other things. You hold the trip reset button then turn the key to position 1 and you will see a test run. Press the button until you reach test 7 (you can do this for all the test 1-15), wait a few seconds until you see a 0 and then press it again. I'm not 100% sure if rpm is test 7 but someone should try since I can't drive my car right now.

Here's a video to prove it :P
