A couple of BMW executives have described the upcoming BMW 5 Series to WCF as probably the most beautiful BMW of our time. More and more the black and white psychedelic camo is being set aside so its' only a matter of time before these subjective claims are proven or shattered. These latest spy pictures show the car with an undisguised front grille, fog lights and new aluminium wheels. The headlights, wavy bonnet lines and taillights show clear relations with both the 3 and the 7 Series.

When the Fiver goes on sale in 2010 it will set the tone for a number of new BMW engines. Yes there will be the usual 3.0-litre straight six types, both petrol and diesel. And yes the 300kW (408hp) 4.4-litre twin turbo V8 is a definite for the 550i at least. But the bottom end should be most interesting because of rumours about new four-cylinder petrol turbo engines coming to the fore. The new ActiveHybrid system used in the X6 and 7 Series may also be installed in the 5.

As is normally the case expect to see Touring (wagon) and xDrive AWD models in the lineup.

Not much is known about the interior but it's safe to say an evolution of the 7er and the 5 Series GT would be an accurate picture. That means the stylish plastic gear knob found in automatic transmissions and the updated iDrive system will be included.

They look great.. it might just be the pics.. but one thing that looks "odd" is the mirrors look like they droop down a little.. ?! Maybe it's just me.

new european regulation, all newer cars have bigger mirrors, incl new porsche carrera and E90.

The black one in the rear is the Grand Turismo, note the different headlights?

IMO the current 5 series with M body styling is bmw's best looking car in production. I don't see how anyone can call that ugly

I hate E60 the most out of all the 5's. Those kidney grills just ruin it for me.

This new one is horrible looking. That lower grill and headlight look like something from a ford. It looks like any other large sedan in production, nothing that really screams bmw. Tamest styling ever.

They better have a M-sport right out of the box.

Doubt it, bad business plan.

Yeah, because having a desirable car for sale right away is terrible. They have lost one sale if there isn't a 2011 M-sport 550i available.

People will buy it regardless. Because it's a new car, people have the desire to buy something new.

As sales die off, then they will introduce different packages. It works because that's how people work.

A new twin turbo 400+ hp 550i with the updated interior of the 550i GT is already more desirable than a full M Sport E60. I think it's funny how two guys who have a 1991 318 and a CIVIC are criticizing BMW's business plan on $80,000 vehicles despite those of us who matter saying it's going to be a fantastic car.

Not at all, it's an excellent car in every respect. It goes back next year anyway, likely to be replaced with something non-bmw.

E60s are great cars. But the new F10 is infinitely more desirable with or without an M Sport package. The Sport package alone with already have 19" wheels on this car, and LOOK at it! Sexy as hell. The turbo V8 is a best of a motor. You can have the F10 in June and it's clearly the benchmark of the class once again.

The only problem is that even sport package is inadequate once you have owned two m-sport 5's. The difference between the non msport 545i and msport 550i is night and day. They hardly feel like the same car, where the sport package 545i was soft and wallowy and unstable (in comparision) during any kind of serious cornering, the 550i is composed and rock solid.

active steering?

Active steering on the 545i, not on the msport. Drove why a sport package without active steering and it was even worse. The active steering was the best part of the 545i.

I'm not suggesting I wouldn't buy the M Sport version if it were available. I love the 2008-2010 550i M Sport, it's much better than a non-M Sport. The F10 550i will be a much better vehicle still.
