Hey I was wondering how much a m88/s38 sells for? I have a engine out of a 87 m635 that I am thinking about selling not sure yet. And I jsut wanted to know how much they are worth. And would it be called a m88 or s38? From what I hear they are preaty much the samething. Oh ya it is a 3.5l DOHC

There are slight differences. The M88 has a single timing chain, the S38 has a duplex timing chain.
Show me a pic of the valve cover and I will tell you which engine it is.

That's an S38. The M88 as the BMW logo instead of the words in front of M-POWER.

The S38 was used on Euro cat-equipped cars - same engine as the US spec. The M88/3 has higher compression and a few other differences (like the timing chain as Marek says), and about 30 more HP at the crank when new.

How much are they worth? It depends on overall condition and documentation, just like the car. They are expensive to rebuild, so unknown mileage/undocumented ones go for fairly cheap - maybe a couple of grand. If you have records that include recent valve adjustments, timing chain component replacement (especially for an M88/3) and crank hub replacement, they can be worth $7k or more. A full rebuild can cost $10k, and they aren't a DIY lump. They should be rebuilt by someone with experience (in Canada that'd be Markus Glarner).

from the pic of the engine, the complete intake system is missing, that means the engine cannot be seen/heard running, need a brave soul with a deep pocket to even consider. try to put it back together & make it runs. hope u have the ECM to go with it.

I have the intake it is just off the engine. It also has the complete engine harness and computer.
