I'd like to get my a/c going.......

I know the repair bill could be as high as $1500 so i'd like to do it myself if I can.

I don't know where to start......any input?

you need to find out where the leak is.

First thing i would do is goto Princess Auto and buy one of those A/C self recharge kits, there is one kit that comes with the hose/connections and 2or3 cans of refrigerant. One of them is a Dye.

Put the dye in first, try to see if you can find the leak, check to see if the compressor comes on, and do some troubleshooting from there.
