I have come across what is claimed to be 1984 m3. How do I know if it is really a m3. A little history of the car would help. What I have found so far is that they came with a four cylinder, This has a 2.5 under the hood.

wasn't the first year for E30 M3's in 1986? and I think the 2.3L Inline4 motor was the first motor offered not the 2.5 Inline4.

No NA e30 m3 has the 2.5L s14.
But there was M3 Evo's that had a 2.5L s14. (Not sure if it was evo IorIIorIII)
But either way, no e30 m3 in 84, so it is a fake.

Well thanks for all info and so quickly. I will get the vin and by the way the body on this 84 is very good, in fact much better than my 91

Yes there were. The Sport Evo had a 2.5L s14.
e30 m3 wasn't sold until 1986.
If it's an m3 it'll have a 4-cyl motor with individual throttle bodies, and look like this:

It'll have very wide wheel arches and aero treatment like this:

Unless the year is recorded wrong, the only thing m3 is likely to be the badges.

its a 1984 325e after much investigation and very knowledgeable replies and me reading the sticker on inside front left fender. Too bad for me it was sold sunday night after I looked at it for the first time. I wanted it for parts or perhaps using it for a rally car instead of my 318i. Still need a lsd, so if you got one lets talk

Uhmmmmmmmm, incredibly UNLIKELY that it will look like the one pictured below as ECHO posted. If you get that *version* of the M3 motor, you just struck gold baby (and a sh-t load of headaches that would empty your wallet, your mom's purse, your mom's mom's purse)!!! That is NOT stock as found on the road-going version.

Good score if you could have gotten it cheap if it had an S14 in it and the motor wasn't pooched.
FFS if he doesn't know what an m3 looks like, he's hardly going to be able to tell the difference between a stock or modifed s14. I says BMW mpower, has 4 cyl, is twincam, and has ITB's. Close enough. :)

Uhmmmmmmmmmmmm.......... on the intake side of that monster pictured, it's HUGELY different then stock. But you may have a point. Then again, with all the keyboard commando's around, someone may grab that picture and all of a sudden think they are an expert at what an S14 looks like. Better just to post the right picture......................
