so when i bought the car i knew the idle was off. the mechanic said check plugs, ICV, vac leaks.

My plugs are clean and good, i just clean the ICV, and i cant find any leaks.

it idles under 1k but sputters/shudders every 3/ 4 seconds.

Any help

Thanks guys

it could be a lot of things. if the maf is defective this could happen, but then you might be running rich and you could tell or you'd get a cel. it could also be something with the cap and rotor causing no spark, or a weak spark on one of the plugs so check if its properly sealed and/or not worn. could also be a faulty plug cable. those are somethings that come to mind.

Does it ever throw a check engine light when it idles? If it does, you could get the code read. Had the same issue with the idle and the code said it was a faulty gas cap.

its better :) but still not solid. cleaning the ICV helped.

no check engine light.

i hope with new plugs and a oil change that will help too.

What would you guys recommend i put in it for oil?

does it start ok?
does it bog when taking off from a start?
does the idle go high when its cooler out, then drop down, or does the idle stay at pretty much the same speed even after it gets up to temp?

Hi,

I had the same problem. I checked everything. The only thing that fully fixed it was a NEW BMW OEM ICV, yes brand new. About 200$ CAN. if the rev keep on going up and down constantly, then a new O2 sensor is needed. This you can get aftermarket, i got Bosch. I have a 1991 318i so i have been through it all... the best oil for this car is the Castrol Syntec 5W30. The black jug of 4.4L should do you fine. Any other oil I have found to be not as good as this brand/grade. I have tried many, believe me. Have fun...

i think it was a bunch of small problems,
once i cleaned the ICV, new plugs, oil change, put on new hoses on allmost verything under the hood. it just kind of stopped.

It's lovely how the E30 won't reveal it's secrets, even when you pamper it. They're such a princess.
