View Full Version : 12 Point Torx

So I'm tearing apart my old engine to see the extent of the damage from the rod knock and realized I don't have a 12 point external torx socket for the rod bolts. Does anyone know where to get these? All I can find are 6 point.

I'm pretty sure you can get them a partssource, not sure about napa, not sure what else you would have in the GTA

Are you 100% sure you're talking about 12 point Torx?

If it has a "head" as opposed to a socket and its "torx" (it has pointy corners) then it's called a e-torx. If it has a head, though, and has 12 points, you just need a regular 12 point socket. And, of course, most wrench sets have 12 point box ends.

There is no such thing as 12-point e-torx, so I think you're talking about a regular 12 point socket. They're used in high torque applications. My Garrett turbo used them, but I used a regular wrench.

Update, I remembered I have some pistons in the basement. Those ARE regular 12 point bolts, not torx or anything.

That said, I couldn't find 12 point sockets in any regular store, but Sears in the USA had them. Sears in Canada might too.

Okay, thanks guys, I really appreciate the help. I've never seen something like that. I'll give the box ends a shot, but I'm thinking the handle of the wrench won't fit - might have to go looking for the 12 point sockets.

I'd never seen them before my turbo either. They're actually excellent bolts; I wish I could buy them for other uses but never see any bolts like that. You can torque the crap out of them before they give.

My ARP studs also are 12 point come to think of it.

Snap on sells them for lots of money. I borrowed one to take off my camshaft pulley bolt. I tried sockets and wrenchs but it started to strip it so i gave up on that idea.

I just checked, Sears has them in Canada on their website so any larger sears would have 12 point sockets, same price as any other socket.

Up to $4 for metric 12 point.
