I got a regular e36 steering rack for $80 - it will shorten the turn ratio.

You do have to do custom work to the knuckle to get it to fit, btw.

ok, I need clarity on this; some say it bolts right in. which is fine. but some tell me the knuckle which the spine from the rack goes into must be changed because it is a different length. Something to do with a taller shaft on the steering rack.. could you elaborate please?

you need to lengthen the shaft from the E30.. better yet

thanks for the link; but I'm stuck at one point. Step 17 explains to cut aluminum spacer in half with dremel. What aluminum spacer and where did this come from?
I understand we are shortening the knuckle; but what is the length of this "new" sleeve that we are cutting to adapt to the knuckle? it's a great write up but could be more accurate to explain the finished length of the steering knuckle compared to the original.

rack bolts on but the steering column connection between the rack and column needs to modified

yes I already mentioned this...and it explains this in the link..but as I said in Step 17. what spacer needs to be cut in half. where did they get the spacer and what dimension is the spacer? where did they come up with this???

If you look back up in the PARTS YOU NEED section their are three spacers listed so I am guessing it would be one of those. Unfortunately I have never done the swap so I'm not 100% sure

You buy a piece of tubing and make one I assume.

ah yes, I see the parts listing. there are quantity of 2 I would imagine to line up the rack and the single one to be cut. part# too. very nice.

Thanks for pointing that out to me. much appreciated. :-)

^just pm 'euroguy' his name is Tom. I just bought an s52 rack for my e30 from him (for a great price!). There is also a kit you can get to lengthen the rack to make it fit properly...

For those that have an E36 rack in their E30's, how is the steering feel? The ratio may be shorter, but are there drawbacks? Is there added weight to the steering as well? I hate my overly light and indirect E30 steering!

^ill let you know tuesady when I put mine in! :D
the ratio will def. be MUCH better, but not sure about a heavier feel (I hope there is cus i also hate the light/loose feel).
