View Full Version : grinding noise from rear end

hey guys, question for you. I just started to dig into my 89 325i and i got the rear end up and am hearing a ginding noise form thre diff area. It seems to be coming from where the driveshaft goes into the diff. There is the remnants of what appears to be a dust shield of some sort there but it is rusted out. Anyone else have this problem? Any ideas (other then replaceing everything) as to what I may be able to do to fix this?

the pinion seal is gone or some call it front shaft seal and bearing. The grinding is most likely the bearing gone as a result of the dust shield being gone. water getting in and washing out the grease and you get break down. as this breaks down you're gonna lose diff fluid and temps will increase along with wear and tear. the drive shaft gets sloppy as a result. Keep driving it this way and you'll be into u joints, a possible center hanger bearing and even a rear trans output shaft and seal along with a guibo clutch.
Best to drop the diff and repair or just get another diff- it's easier.
