are you using mineral oil or synthetic?
I would suspect that if you've been using mineral or the previous owner was using mineral stick to mineral oil. I believe 10w40. I wouldn't recommend switching to syn. because syn has more detergents in it and what has and can happen is it will wash the oil deposits out from the gaskets. They could and have started leaking do too the washing out effect.
If you decide to switch to syn first change necessary oil gaskets then you'll be safe.

20w50 is a summer oil; it is thicker so the viscosity of the oil doesn't break down as fast.
But the standard oem recommended oil is 10w40 for e30 motors. now if you run the car hard most of the time a thicker oil may be recommended. But it's for summer use only.
Don't run this during colder weather. takes longer for the pump to build pressure to send into the oil journals and up into the top of the motor where starvation tends to occur.
You may also find your car uses less oil too with heavier weight oil.

10w40 in the winter.

15w50 Castrol in the summer.
Sometimes 20w50, depends on what i get my hands on quicker.

check your owners manual; it should explain the temp range for each viscosity oil.
Then you can decide based on an education rather then just opinion, including mine. driving habits are a factor as well in choosing.
