View Full Version : e30 325i exhaust condensation

Questions for my 1987 325i, m20b25 engine.
Just finished the cylinder head replacement with new head gasket, timing belt, tensioner, etc..
Car started and seems to run perfect but, engine check light is on and there is water dropping from muffler, exhaust condensation, more than usual. muffler is also new, stock, is it normal to condensate so much? never seen it leaking before.
left it running for 20 minutes, temperature is normal, not overheating, not mixing oil / coolant.
I did all the work by myself, never done it before, is there anything i need to know/check before i start driving it on the road? also whats the torque for the head bolts on this motor, 30NM +90 degrees? do they need retorquing after some time?

usually there is water from the exhaust when you first start it up, it should go away after the exhaust warms up and makes it evaporate

Torque spec: 22lbs/33nm - 3 stages: 1st just tighten to spec: 2nd stg: 90 degrees, 3rd stg: 90 degrees. important: this is only recommended for TORX bolt type.

HEX bolt: 40nm/30lbs. 2nd stg: 60/44lbs after waiting 15min, 3rd stg: 25nm after running engine for 25 minutes.

water is common - will burn off or stop altogether as exhaust warms up. short distance driving also creates more then usual. build up is gradual.

I use 12.9 grade stretch bolts with hex head, what you mean by 3rd. stage 25nm, add additional 25nm to 70nm, total of 95nm? is there a number for how much total torque they need to be?
