W2WDETAILING
04-05-2009, 07:02 PM
it looks like spraypaint.. i can see the orange peel from here *shiner* you wont get it looking shiny doesent matter if you wet sand it or polish it if you even attempt to wetsand it you will burn thru not to mention putting a machine to that...it will burn right thru!..if you want a decent paint job on budget paint it flat it will look more even but hey thats just my .02

and if you want a really cheap paint job there is a place in brampton that does 500 dollar paint jobs if you prep they supply but its(forgot what its called) its not a base clear coat it's all in one so they shoot it and bake it and voila pm me if you want the address

Its not a MTech kit. Its some aftermarket one.

Do you have a two door, or four door e30? Just curious...

richie_s999
04-05-2009, 11:01 PM
not an m-tech kit its a hersteller kit, very hard to find. Not going for a show car finish, yes its single stage spray, you can wet sand it and polish it, there are special polishing agents for these paints. There is no orange peel, your seeing things, I sprayed one thick coat then dusted it 5 times to give it texture. might put a clear over it not sure yet.

I just wanted the car to be one color, cars been in black primer for a year and the kit was on a red car. building the motor and suspension before I dump money on paint.

Strange that you dusted it, unless you were going for texture. In any case, I'd throw some clear over that then wetsand.

To those you think you can't, prove them wrong. I have personally seen flat paint wetsanded to a gloss, so this could be a good "10 foot" paint job for sure.

which is a ways away, still have to swap the bumpers, touch up the body kit once it warms up, dust 2 or 3 metallics on the car(thinking of dusting a light mist of red black and silver metallic for a wicked pearl effect) and clear coat for a mirror smooth finish.

Pearl / color metallics are too 'new' looking for the E30, in my humble opinion, however if we all like the same thing we'd all be fighting over the same woman, so variety is good.

LOL AXXE says it strait up!!!!

it does look rough in the pics, cause its far from done,(and I have a shitty camera) the car was primer black the body kit was red, do I put the base coat on, I don't have alot of free time right now, so working on it when i can, not overly worried about it, I am just happy its got a base coat and is one color :)

Here are the pics Ignite wanted of the from valance i installed, which need some repair, make some new fog lenses and hook up some new brake ducts, I have a one peice euro bumper for the front to get cleaned up too.

DIY painting takes alot of time and patience, and most people rush and mess it up, just going to take my time and hopefully get it done for June, I will also be tied up building a motor soon so it'll get done when it gets done.

here's the part that will make all freak - the clear coat will be done with a brush!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *wiggle**rockout*

I already have one of the more agressive and rare body kits for the E30, so I think it will pull of the look. I tend to push limits with my cars and go against the staus que most peole do. Worst case I don't like it when its done and I strip it and do it all over again. thats the fun part of building cars.

Some depot smoked turn signals, new fog lens (some good aftermarket replacements out there) and headlights that are straight (lol) and you're rockin. :) Canadian Tire sell the lowbeams for about $8 and they are *nice* when they're new. The clear glass really helps. :)

Seriously, I think this is my new favorite lip. I would make a thick aluminum splitter and bolt it to the under carriage somewhere for strength. I dare say it might even be functional. That's just crazy talk there.

4.27 LSD? Wow, that's spinny! What's that from?

318 verts had them, my car is a 91 318is, so the 4.10 is the standard diff thet goes with the M42, and they used the 4.27 to get the car moving a bit faster with the extra weight of vert parts. Just going up a bit in gearing, now the 4.45 gears would be insane.

those lenses that I have in the head lights are glass Bosch high beams that hold H1 bulbs rotated to keep the beam in my lane, they have 6000k HID's, need to paint off the top half( the patteren makes an X infront of the car and hits truck drivers side mirrors)

I haven't compared them to Euro's side by side, but I have over 70ft of light on the rd, strait and in my lane!!!

Just to make sure, the 318i vert should feel faste because of the diff ratio?

richie_s999
04-10-2009, 09:15 PM
Just to make sure, the 318i vert should feel faste because of the diff ratio?

Not sure never drove one, as far as I know its a power to weight thing with the vert weighing more then the regular coupe. The 4 cyl cars are geared different in the tranny and rear diff then the six cyl cars and there were many diffs ratios over the years as the weight and power bands changed with cars.

With the 4.10 diff my motor runs at 2700rpm at 100km and hour, where 6 cy tranny would be running way way higher on a 4.10 diff. think the highest they came with was a 3.73.

going up to a 4.27 from a 4.10 will give me a bit more jump in first and second gear, and the gears will complement the lighter flywheel and stroker motor.

e30_kid89
04-10-2009, 09:50 PM
^^^They would be running the same since the Getrag 240 and 260 both have overdriven 5th gears.
The first 4 gears for each are slightly different.

richie_s999
04-10-2009, 10:16 PM
then how does a 6 cyl with low set of gears in the diff idle the same at 100km in 5th if they have the same gear, as my 318is with the 4.10? now I am confused?

e30_kid89
04-10-2009, 10:28 PM
With the 4.10 diff my motor runs at 2700rpm at 100km and hour, where 6 cy tranny would be running way way higher on a 4.10 diff.

I was reffering to that part. From what I understood it looked like you were saying with the same rear end the 6cyl would be running higher than 4cyl.

They both have the same 5th overdriven gear so it would be the same.

I really don't know what to say, without sanding like an asshole.
I feel, that, your car can benefit from a cheap, professional paintjob, and a little more attention to detail. I mean, you've got paint on ur foglights, and I can still see red.

everlast
04-11-2009, 12:26 PM
Sanding like an asshole. Interesting typo, lol.

But, shit, he's right. There is red visible on the front still, and the side windows do look like they have overspray on the bottom in or so. What you might find is while it might look better than white and red, it will be a pile more work since you'll have to sand most of this off to fix the parts that need fixing, like the front lip (very cracked) and the likely small dents, etc, all over the car.

Just my experience from working in a body shop.

richie_s999
04-11-2009, 06:35 PM
LOL OMG how many times to I have to say it, the body works not done...the paints a base coat so the car was one color.....the car was in black primer...the body kit was red...wanted to get it on and have the car one color....still have to fix the front valance....I didn't care about the fog light to much cause the lenses are cracked to shit anyway....still have to but the one peice front euro bumber on (part of the)....still need to fix up the E36 M3 bumper thats going on....still need to adjust and touch up the side skirt kit.....then put another coat of base on....then dust the metallic colors....then clearcoat.....oh ya...in the middle of installing the stereo.....installing the new diff....picking up an m44 motor next weekend for the crank and wiring...need to break down the m42 thats on my stand now...send it out to be bored out for the s52 pistons(which I am still sourcing)....get the m20 flywheel and starter head figured out.....LOL I'm in project over load LOL

I have one day off a week, and do the Durham meet on 2 of those days.

body work was planned for the summer, but when I found the kit I got it on and based the car, will be puttering away at it with plans to have it done for July 19th...eurofest or whatever bimmercruise have morphed into. I so wish I had more time to work on the car!!!!!!!!!

I payed attention to detail where it was needed and parts that have not been redone yet or are being replaced got skimped on. Guess this could turn into a build thread....I'll poist the stereo picks so you can see what this weekend's work was as soon as its done.

I'll update with pics as things move forward

Cheers to all

Yeah I have a set of 17x8. They are ET20 so they do fit without spacers, but they come pretty close to the front struts on my (lowered) car. They need a bit of work (some small bends and a fair bit of curb rash) but all of it is fixable.

IS IT that all E30 owners have some tool box in garage? I am getting an idea that it's next to impossible to drive this cars unless you can fix it each month. Just want to get an idea.

Yes, that's correct.

No really though, once you get an e30 into good shape, where anything that is worn or needs replacing has been replaced, it is a very reliable car. The problem is that any car with super high KMs likely has a LOT that needs replacing. It entirely depends on the shape of your car.

The tool box was a Christmas gift from the wife :) If anyone is looking they are under a grand at Costco, best price and far better quality then you'll get anywere else, I'd put it close to sanp on and MAC for quality.

I have only had to fix a few things on the car in the last year and a half, nothing compaired to other cars I have owned, but the car had everything done in one shot for safety.

No really though, once you get an e30 into good shape, where anything that is worn or needs replacing has been replaced, it is a very reliable car. The problem is that any car with super high KMs likely has a LOT that needs replacing. It entirely depends on the shape of your car.

Richie: for the love of god man, download Picasa from Google and use it to resize your pictures before you post them.

http://picasa.google.com/

downloaded it and spent half an hour trying to figure out how to resize the pics, I feel retarded cause I can't figure it out. LOL

lol richie

- select the photo you want
- optionally: crop it, press "i'm feeling lucky" to get half decent contrast, etc
- select Export at the bottom
- export it to a desktop folder called "for max" or something
- make the size "800" which will make it 800 wide maximum

:)
