Hey Guys,

Just picked up my first BMW last week and thought I should join the forum so I can get some advice on my purchase.

1988 325iX Touring 5 Speed
120,000km
Dark Grey, Sport seats
Bone stock except for the aiwa deck and sweet trailer hitch (has to go soon).

The car was imported from Germany 5 years ago and has been sitting in underground parking for the last 3 (last sticker was May 06).

So far I have done front and rear rotors and pads, replaced all fluids, new ebrake cables and shoes.

Now I just need a new windshield and new rubber to get my cert done (running on 10 day temp tags right now).

Once the cert is done then it is on to the mods... not sure what to do first.
Intake, Exhaust and chip?
Drop & Rims/Rubber?
Short Shifter?
Paint?

Pics will be up later today.

That's really awesome! A little TLC to the rusty spots and general paint and this will be looking good, then I'd do a drop and new wheels. Needs an "is" front lip too. Then you can wait until next winter to get the rust properly repaired and a full paint job.

Personally, I think the trailer hitch is awesome, though I can't believe someone cut an mtechII bumper for a hitch, lol. Paint it black and get a ball cover for it. Then get a sea-doo to tow. :)

Anyway, beautiful and rare e30, congrats!

Awesome car man! Welcome to Max!

Yeah you have a pretty good base to work from there, by the looks of it. Just treat the rust spots so they don't get any worse before you get them fixed. Then worry about the suspension and maybe some engine mods... Save the wheels for later, you'll do fine with those, and the other work will have a more noticable impact from the driver's seat.

Congrats on the purchase, and welcome to the club!
If you can swing it, try to bring it out to the friday meets and show it off a little.

it is true though, the saddest part is the rear apron butchering it has suffered

shouldn't be to hard to fill the hole from the trailer hitch, that is one of the oddest hitches I have erver seen, but great looking find, How much you snag it for??

Was this the one that was on auto trader? i saw it a couple weeks back.
I love the e30 tourings, I'm definitely going to get one eventually for a project car. First thing I's do is take care of any rust it has (ie. rear window). After that full suspension overhaul (coils, springs, bushings etc...). Then go for more hp.... something conservative like 8psi (...I'm not implying anything here*smoke*)

Well she died on me on the way to work this morning. Just merging onto the 427 and power started to drop off, eventually had to pull over to the shoulder and it completely died.

It was turning over fine, would catch and idle rough for a 10-20 seconds and die again. I am thinking ignition somewhere.

Anyway, CAA came and it is at my garage now and I am awaiting the verdict.

Just get a pick up camper and throw it on the back of your car lol.

Nice touring man, I have a soft spot for them.

not that I hope it's something worse... but if it is... S50 swap.

update... I was out of gas.

No, I am not a total idiot - turns out the fuel level sending unit (?) was incorrect and was showing I had 1/4 tank of gas when in fact it was empty.

$100 for the part and 2 hours of labour - mostly diagnostic.

^^bahaha.... ok, fair enough, you're not an idiot, that's just a really funny kind of occurrence. Good thing it wasn't something worse!

Another IX touring? dammit! I thought I was the only one! NIce find man. What did you pick it up for?
Tip: look under the drivers seat by the wheel well for rust, and pull back the carpet near the clutch. I had a hole the size of a quarter right through. Apparantly it's common on these cars. Also look at the rear wheel wells.
We should hook up in the summer when mine is on the road.

Picked it up for $3200 and I have put $1000 into it so far to get it on the road - this is my daily driver right now.

I plan on going over the car completely this weekend and making a list of things that I have to do (rust etc.) and things I want to do (chip, suspension). Then I will set out and tackle them one at a time to hopefully get this car where I want it by summer.

Thanks for the tips, I will definitely look into them this weekend.
