i have a 1991 318i which is m42 engine. The other day fuel pump not working, so today I gave it a bang with a hammer to see if it would resurrect it. Ta da simple thing worked however, i am using octane 87 it is completely 87 not mixed and when starting up the car idles at 5000 rpm i left for 5 seconds because it wouldn't go back down tried starting again for at least 5 seconds idle still at 5000 rpm wouldn't go down what could be my problem?no blue smoke coming from back recently changed spark plugs never changed the fuel filter bought the car recently.

Huge vacuum leak presumably. That means a split, loose or missing hose somewhere before the throttle body, where the throttle cable attaches.

Note that you need to replace your pump. If you are driving hard one day, and the pump goes to half speed, it will develop half pressure. The car will run, but run lean (might even be faster lol) and you could very likely blow your motor due to the lean condition.

agree about vacum leak, why the hell are you using 87 octane in an M42.....the motor reqiures 91 octane!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! is $5 a tank more don't be a cheapass

Hey that's what I was thinking too. Be nice to your M42 and give it some 91 octane.
