Has anybody used vinyl/ trim tape instead of painting their chrome trim? If so, what were your results?

Quite a few people have done this with good results. Trick is to be patient and take your time applying the vinyl.
Yeah I've seen a few done like this, and it comes out looking pretty good... not a bad solution for 5 bucks. Like dbworld4k said, take your time! Be very patient and make sure it goes on smooth and without bubbles. The only tricky place is the bend in the trim, people tend to use two pieces of tape there because curving it that severely will result in wrinkles. Plus if you screw it up at anytime, you can just peel it off and try again. Also use really wide tape, you'll need it to curve under the crease properly.

Did it on my E34, Canadian tire actually sells some nice stuff called "Blackout Tape", but I advise you to apply it when it's hot outside, not in the winter, it's really prone to cracking when it's cold, but you can really work it around corners when it's warm.

i've heard about the blackout tape but was told it only comes in sizes up to 1.75" which i'm pretty sure would be too narrow for me.

What are you blacking out? If it's your trim then it's plenty.
