What is the best scanner for engine codes etc for the e39. My local guy has a snap on that he uses. I'd like to get something that I can use at home. Is carsoft worth the money or should I look at a stand alone unit? Would appreciate any feedback.

edit: speaking of which (i should probably make my own thread for this) the service engine light came on on the 530 this week. I checked the gas cap and oil cap, wouldn't go off. Is there any one in the KW area that has a code scanning tool? Car is still running normally so it must be something minor (hopefully).

The 2 Digit Code on the Peake seems like it leaves a lot to be desired.

I have CarSoft and the OBD-2 tool from obd-2.com.
I like the OBD-2 tool and use it to view OBD-2 data and reset codes.
CarSoft is only good to read the other modules (other than the DME) and reset SRS codes.

In my case, my 530 has the latest software for the MS43 (v81?) and the CarSoft live data does not work. It shows all zeros.

The peake tool can give up to a 4 digit code.
Check out the code tables in the manual http://www.peakeresearch.com/manuals/FCX3-manual%201.0%20NA.pdf

Well I need to reset transmission codes ect not just the motor. Will all of them work with those modules too?

ahh. Yeah I think Peake only reads DME codes, so it won't be able to help you with transmission. I guess car soft would be the way to go then.
