The free Sony deck I had in my car for the last few years inevitably died.

I got a new Alpine CDA9884. Problem is, the bass comming out of the sub is about 1/2 what it used to be.

Before, with the Sony, I could set the sub volume on the deck and the amp to about half to match the bass to the speakers. If I felt like it, I could turn up the sub volume and loudness on the deck and shake the car to pieces. If I also turned up the volume control on the amp, I could get the sub to produce so much bass it would distort like crazy.

Now, with the Alpine, i've had to turn loudness on, and set the sub volume on the deck and the amp to maximum to match the bass to the speakers. This means I cannot turn the bass any higher, and it's hardly close to the bass potential I once had.

I've rechecked the wiring and the grounds multiple times, I don't know what else I could do. Is this just the way Alpines are?

Thx in advance.

What kind of amp do you have?

It's a Bazooka EL8. A bass tube subwoofer with a built in amp.

Sounds like a pre-out issue. Check the pre-out voltage of your old deck and the new deck. let me know what the voltages are, and ill tell you what to do... i suspect this is the issue.

^^ Your'e right that's probably the case, which is why I was asking what kinda of amp... The 9884 only has 2V pre-outs... A line driver will make the problem go away.

Update - turns out it the original low bass problem was probably my fault- I reset all settings back to factory, and it improved quite a bit...but now a new problem...

I've now noticed that the bass output increases by almost double when I either
a. turn on the headlights or
b. when engine RPMS is declining between 1,400rpms and idle ie. when slowing down...

Bass will half when I turn the headlights off, or when the engine goes to idle, or is accellerating. I've asked my mechanic, who has some knowledge on audio (which is more than me) and he's completely purplexed...

check the voltage at the amp you are getting when you notice this.

Sounds like either a wiring problem or alt starting to go.
