Since the 5er thread has been so slow *sleep*, I decided to start a new topic.
I know our cars don't have much room for modding (especially 540's), so I was wondering what each of you felt was your best modification to date.

Myself:

1) My summer setup = 20" BMW Style 101M rims w/ low profile tires = No more mushy steering feel + none of the feared harshness.

2) My winter boots = 18" Stock M-Pars with Bridgestone LM25's = Doesn't feel like I'm on winter tires.

3) OEM UGDO (previous owner failed to order that option).

4) Complete M5 brake system w/ European floating rotors.

5) M5 trunk mat.

6) BMW (trunk mounted) grocery bag holder.

545 shifter and zhp knob, makes the shifts so much better. Shorter than stock but not too short.

Buying an M5 was the best mod I could have possibly done.

On a serial note, I love my SSK.

I don't know what you are talking about but there are tons of mods for the 540.

I don't have a 540 anymore but the best 2 mods I had on that car was the custom Brullen exhaust system & MarkD ECU remap.

but then came across BMW Style 101M's (made by BBS) and thought they were a more fluid and contemporary interpretation of the original BBS look (still incorporating the staggered, fat lip, rivited and cross-spoke features), which I thought matched up slightly better with the more organic E39 body.

I'll be doing some Dinan mods on my 5er, as well (got it on the E36).
Though it's gonna be a while, as I prefer to pick up all my hardware on fleebay, on the cheap.

I picked LM's not just because they were LM's, but because if felt that they look the best on E39's. I dislike the flat dish and prefer Step lips on our cars. I literally went through thousands of wheels deciding what to get, and nothing beat the look of an E39 on LM's.

I haven't seen anyone do the 101's on an E39, curious to see what it looks like, but my opinion still stands.

Went through the same agonizing search for rims.....hated most of the choices out there (except for AC Schnitzer Type III or LM's)...found the E39 body a difficult one to match.
The flat lip was a concern to me too, cause I thought it wouldn't look good unless I went with a super low profile tire.
So I decided to go with 245/30/20(F) & 285/25/20(R) Pirelli PZero Nero tires, which have a rounded sidewall design (I know I'm anal *drink*), making the rims realy pop.
Style 101M's (from a 760il) have the same ET specs, as my stock rims, which allowed me to come in under 2% divergence from my stock rim+tire circumference, hence no rubbing issues, what so ever.
Just had to get the center hub bored out to E39 specs (cost only $160) for a perfect fit.
Found the rims (w/ < 3000 miles) + tires (w/ < 1000 miles) on craigslist, all for C$2600 (Incl. shipping), which was another incentive to give these a try.
I'll post pics, once they're back on in May.

Wow, those rims are beautiful! I've seen them on a white 750iL and they were nothing short of astounding.

I myself prefer fat 5 spoke rims the most, even more than basketweave style rims, something about how they flow with the rest of the car, and a big dish doesn't hurt either.

I love it, it's perfect, not too loud, not too quiet. On idle the car is almost silent, but at full revs, it's nice and loud. There's a youtube vid of it, I'm at work so I don't have access. You can search for "Gamite's"

The lip, I'm not 100% yet, waiting to see it on Laidback's car.
