Hey guys

I just picked up my Non-Vanos M50 from a 92 325i auto. Which is a downside because it's an auto. It's going in my 91 318is which I just pulled the engine and cleaned the bay.

Engine bay: I'm using the 325ix booster and Master cylinder with M50 mounting arms and 535i mounts.

Exhaust: I'm going to have ebay long tube headers staying dual 2.25 all the way back to 2 cats, then to a Magnaflow 14385 muffler.

Electronics: I have a auto harness which I guess is a downside and makes more work for me but will make no difference in the end.

Transmission: I'm using the G240 with a M20 single mass flywheel, lightened with a kevlar disk and stock pressure plate. I have a E36 325i shift carrier and rod with a E36 5spd drive shaft and E30 CSB installed backwards. I'm also using the G260 stock cross member and stock mounts.

The extra connector for the ESM (Auto tranny) is the one with the white ring I believe

http://i41.tinypic.com/2ngwsjk.jpg

The auto tranny ECU plug.

http://i41.tinypic.com/161f59s.jpg

So far on order I have:
Headers
Oil pan gasket
Valve cover gasket
Oil filter
Spark plugs
Rear main seal
Intake manifold gasket

Theres more i'm sure but that's all I got for now.

I'll keep you guys updated, I need to put this thing on the stand so I can tear it down some more.

I still need an oil pan, I think I got a hold of one so we're good.
Once I get everything sorted out i'll make a big master parts list. Since there isn't a confirmed one for a M50 into a 318 using the G240. I know i'm missing stuff now, I'll add it later as it pops into my head.
Cheers

Sam

You're forgetting the 1/2" aluminum tube rollcage (lightweight = fast) and the multicoloured wheels.

You both suck. It's all about the fiberglass sunroof. It's an 318 so you'll have to cut the hole yourself, then fill it with fiberglass and duct tape.

Still got a sun roof, 318's were still unicorns without sunroofs.

And I know i'm not Devon Fuhraze, but it will be there soon enough.

Sam, your exhaust is overkill. Go with 2" duals instead if you can.

SamE30e
02-04-2009, 05:24 PM
The stock 325i is 2.25's all the way back is it not? Isn't that why people run the 14385 muffler? It's dual 2.25 in/out/

everlast
02-04-2009, 05:25 PM
Stock e30 325i is 1.75" IIRC, which is very suspect today. :P
EDIT: DUAL 1.75", jesus I suck today.

Dual 2" back will be plentiful for teh NV M50.

Just noticed the motor was from an auto. Make sure to add a pilot bearing to that list, or else you'll fry the input shaft bearing on the transmission!

Well I guess update time, I got bored today and started pulling things off, mainly the harness.

I forgot how much of a bitch it is to get injector plugs off a BMW. You need to use 2 picks to seperate the clips, it was a bitch.

Oh yea and to the owner who had this engine before me. Whatever shop you took it to, to get the engine changed when you blew the original, please let me know where it is. So I can go and kick the mother ****ers who put this wiring harness on the engine square in the dick!

Basically it's down to the block, head and intake manifold. I need to clean it up real nice before it goes in. That means scrubby scrub scrub!

http://i39.tinypic.com/2w7qnv9.jpg

Question. See that pulley on the A/C bracket? Can I take that whole bracket and pulley off if i'm not using A/C?

I figured if I yelled it might go, but it's sadly not that easy..

So I have about 3 leads on oil pans, left a deposit with one place but it's kinda far. And didn't do much today except discover there is still oil in the engine, when I turned it on the stand it poured all over the floor. Oh yea and I pulled the intake manifold, not a whole lot because I feel like shit.

here is a question, when you put the 6 cylinder m50 in the 318, what do you do about making the tach work? doesnt the coil over plug set up not work on e30 clusters?

Need to swap the coding plug in the cluster.

02-06-2009, 02:26 PM
hmm, so you can use the 4 cylinder cluster with the 6 cylinder engine?

The M42 already uses individual coils, but it doesn't matter because the output from the DME to the cluster is the same on E36 and E30's. So You just change the coding plugs to the one off a M20B25 and it's all gravy.

m60e30
02-06-2009, 02:29 PM
so now would that work with the 8 cylinder and a 6 cylinder cluster?

I don't know about that. The 8 cylinder might need a tach signal converter from MSD or something.

My brake booster and MC came in.

I'll be in my car hole changing them.

SamE30e
02-12-2009, 10:22 PM
Well heres how I remote mounted the resivoir. This is required because the intake elbow hits. It's a piece of 1/16th aluminum attached to the shocktower where the throttle cable bracket connects. I just bent it accordingly and drilled holes for the bolt and 2 nipples.

I took 1/4" tubing, heated it up and pushed it over, it made a tight seal, then I put some zip ties for re assurance.

I still need to mount the P/S resivoir. Nothing a piece of 1/8" aluminum and 2 holes can't fix.

http://i39.tinypic.com/24g7e3q.jpg

Heres how it sits

http://i42.tinypic.com/1589zbd.jpg

http://i39.tinypic.com/2jw75l.jpg

I got some parts in today, oil pan, motor mount (yes 1.. they ****ed up), outer tie rod end, intake manifold gaskets.

I'm waiting on:

Oil pan gasket
Rear main seal
323i TOB
Pressure plate
spark plugs
oil filter
valve cover gasket set

My friend picked up a M20 starter for me and another has a E36 5spd drive shaft for me.

And a couple other things, once that's done it'll be all gravy.

Tranny is out, Scott came over and helped with that. Guibo bushings are a whore, so when in doubt, take the whole drive shaft out.. with the tranny.

And the engine is semi back together, just need to change the sump and oil pan, then do the valve cover gaskets.

SamE30e
03-02-2009, 04:39 PM
Well I've been slacking on updates, and well.... working on the car in general.

My buddy is dropping off my suction tube and throw out bearing tonight. and those are the last parts I need to drop the engine in. It's pretty much back together. I just need to change the oil pan, put the PS pump on, hook up the alternator, put the tranny and clutch on, then drop it in. I'm hoping it starts right up, otherwise I might just cry.

I'll have some pictures or more updates later tonight.

SamE30e

Shit, I forgot to call you. It wasn't the CPS, and the Bentley is wrong, it says it should be 1280ohm, when it should be 480ohm.

I just need a CSB then I can go pick up my exhaust from Phil and then roast some tires. This is all given my clutch works properly.

Oh and I put my e-fan in, I can turn it on by hitting the A/C switch, or it automatically turns on at 90 degrees.
