Hey guys, though I'd post some pics of a recently-completed project. I had the Robert Rauschenberg 635CSi Art Car hood reproduced (albeit on an E30 hood) and I mounted it in my living room:

For reference, here's a link to the original car:

The hood was from that mint 325i that Euroguy was parting a few months ago. I had it resprayed with a fresh Alpine White base. My father is a retired graphic designer and he agreed to reproduce Rauschenberg's design. I provided him with detailed photographs of the original E24 hood and he modified the proportions slightly to work with the E30 piece. All told, he probably spent about two weeks planning and painting.

So basically, the materials cost was low but it's difficult to put a price on my dad's time!

Thanks for all the positive comments.

Damn, that's lucky to have a connection like that. After I saw it, I started wondering how much it would cost to put together.... you'd have to buy the hood (one that's in great shape with no rust), then paint it, and then do all the custom work. If you were to take this idea to someone to have them do it, I'm sure it would cost an arm and a leg. Well done, and kudos to your father!!

What did you use for the black? Is it vinyl stick on? Can't imagine it would be paint. Did you clearcoat over it?

Again, good job, I'm jealous...

No vinyl -- It's all acrylic paint! He did some clearcoat tests but ended up not using anything. As an indoor display piece, it doesn't really need a fixative.

Thanks Rudy -- I wouldn't say the lighting was a fluke, but my living room has five potlights and two of them are ideally positioned as art spots, giving the area a bit of a gallery feel.

Everyone who's visited and inquired about the piece has expressed a newfound interest in and respect for the BMW brand after hearing the history of the Art Car series. As an enthusiast, it's great to be able to share my passion with my non-enthusiast friends and family on a level they can enjoy and engage with!

BIG *th-up* to your Dad. He did an incredible job.

I know what I'm going to do once I have some spare time...

The problem is that there are a few that I would love to do, especially Sandro Chia's hood....total awesomeness!
Roy Lichtenstein's hood would also be wicked...oops, I meant sickkkk.

Even more impressive... it must have taken quite some time and effort. I guess he stenciled it on then, and painted it in? That must have been a long task...

Is the apline uncaoted then? Just paint, then black acrylic, and no clear coat at all? What kind of finish does it have, more of a matte texture?

I want one... *mumble* haha.

that's wicked.

You serious? That's hilarious... how many does he have? Where does he put them, just all over the place?

Pretty much correct... He painted the entire thing freehand, though the two side panels were drawn in line-form first, then inked afterwards (like a comic book). He masked the character lines at the edges of the raised centre section and the bottoms of the side panels. He also practiced the signature a few times on various different surfaces before painting the final version.

The hood was resprayed as though it were going on a car, so it has a clearcoat. I also took the opportunity to pop in a brand new roundel that I had lying around, so the "new hood" look is complete.

Cool man... I guess the paint bonds to the clear without any problems? Its the black a matte or semi-gloss?

When are going to start selling these?..... *shiner*
