Want to check out a car for me?

I haven't called yet to see if they still have it, but the ad is still there...

http://www.trader.ca/powerpage/details.aspx?vlotid=1246490&adid=7383369

Mileage is a bit high, but it's a rare colour combo and the M-sport.

I think if they still have it on the weekend I might arrange to go check it out and get a PPI.

Thoughts?

Cheers,
-Paul

Probably is a 2002 production make for the high mileage.

Duct_Taper

Yeah, could be. I'm generally not too picky about high mileage, as long as the car has been maintained properly and is in good condition.

I like red cars but a red E39? How about a shameless plug for an E39 M5 (in my sig)? :)

Duct_Taper

I think red E39s are fantastic... black is nice, and blue is better, but red just pops.

Nice M5, but I'm not really in that kind of a price range... and if I was, I'd be looking for an 02 or 03 :)

Its been painted.

I think its a bit too much for a 530i

Duct_Taper

Price actually seems pretty reasonable for an M-sport I thought.

I would expect to negotiate it down a bit, but still.

Did you see it in person? How could you tell it's been painted? I thought it seemed a bit off that they said it was chiaretto red but it looked more like imola in the pictures.

I havent seen it in person, but like you said it seems just a bit off.

The car looks amazing, M package is doing its thing.

I think you should get a 540i Sport - beast

I might still go check it out - I'm hoping either they labeled the colour wrong or the pictures just made it look like a different colour. The only reason I'm really considering this car right now is the rare colour - if it doesn't work out I will continue driving my current E34 for another year or so and then shop for an E39.

I have heard good things about all three models I am considering (530i M-sport, 540i M-sport, and M5) but it seems like the 530 is the best all-round car. If I go to check out that 530, there is another dealer right beside them that has a 540 M-sport that I'll try to drive to get a back-to-back comparison. If the 540 is way better, I'll wait a year and shop for one of those instead.

MLue1
12-02-2008, 10:04 AM
I've driven both, my seat o the pants says the 530 feels better handling wise after all it is lighter up front but once the road straightens up the 540 will more than make up for the little it lost in the curves. It comes down to what you want out of the driving experience... .

Good Luck.

Edit: There is a reason that there aren't many red e39s around... .

Duct_Taper
12-02-2008, 10:50 AM
Yeah, that is generally the opinion I have heard - 530 has decent power and handles great, 540 has great power and handles decent. M5 blows them both away but is way more expensive.

Part of the reason I like the 530 is the maintenance and gas costs should be cheaper, not to mention insurance.

As for the colour... I think there is a variety of reasons that there aren't many red E39s around. One of them being that the red colours available on the E39 weren't really perfect for a 4-door sedan (I personally love imola and japan red, and chiaretto is OK, but your average E39 buyer probably wouldn't agree). Personally I think BMW made a big mistake in not having calypso red as an option on the E39.

To Junaid: If it's really out of your way don't worry about it - but if you get a chance to check it I really would appreciate the feedback.

Cheers,
-Paul

Sweet looking ride, If it's original paint and looks good that would mean owner took care of it. If fresh paint on front, that's normal. If entire car repainted you need to ask why. Love the coulour.

I've just been looking at the pics again... it looks like it might have had an accident at the front driver's side. Looks like the headlight, hood, and fender just don't quite line up right... anyone agree, or am I seeing things? Large pics attached.

Yeah, I thought it looked like Imola too.

I am contemplating going either way on Saturday and taking it, and their E39 M5, and the 540i M-sport at the dealership next door for back-to-back-to-back test drives to help me decide for sure which model I want.

Right fender and hood look like they are not aligned. However it might been in a small fender bender. If I were you I would go and purchase a buyers package.

E39 M5 has a lot more power then the e39 540i and you will fall in love with that power. Keep in mind the M5 is a lot more expensive to maintain then the 540i. I wanted to buy a M5 myself in September of this year. After speaking with a mechanic friend of mine that works at BMW, I decided not to buy the M5. He explained to me they are great cars when new and under warranty. However maintaining an older M5 will get very pricy.

the pics kinda suck.

so the exterior is not the greatest, severe swirling, scratches here and there, what looks like somewhat of repaired rust in the end corner of the hood, bad scratches on the back right passenger window, and the minor fender bender on the front left corner(shown in above pics).

interior looks great though.
tires are pretty new.
also, he says they are getting the full service records.

i didnt look over that closely to be honest, theres many things i missed.
but if your still looking to do a side by side by side comparo, then might as well come check them out, since they have all the cars in the same complex

on a side note...that m5 they have, equipped with a uuc short shift kit has the shortest pull ever! it literally just clicks in and out of gear. i honestly didnt even think it was going into gear until i lifted up the boot and saw the "UUC" imprinted. it seemed like i was rowing a boat when i got back into my car:(

Tires are undersized.

An Imola Red 530i M-Sport is about the ideal E39 though. I'd hit it.

Duct_Taper
12-03-2008, 01:30 PM
Agreed on the imola 530i m-sport being ideal... that's why I was so excited when I saw this one. Not sure I want to take on something that clearly is going to need some body/paint work though.

Does look like the engine bay pretty much matches the exterior though... so I'm thinking the imola probably is original and the dealership just got the colour wrong in the ad.

I think I probably will go and see if I can drive the three cars for comparison though... if the weather is half-decent.

If you need to find out the exact colour just call BMW dealeship and give them the VIN. They will tell you exactly what colour that car left the factory with. You can also get the colur code from them as well in case you need to paint something.

The front bumper looks suspicious to me because the licennce plate holder is panited too. Usually they are the colour of the bumper mouldings.

But the car looks nice!!! You will most definately stand out in a crowd.

it looked like while reversing the driver scraped something.
also, the hood latch was pretty screwed up, so it might have been opened in the pics.

Is that a dent on the left rear 1/4 above the tail lights?

If you like the car I would offer them $9,000 and take it from there.

Duct_Taper
12-04-2008, 12:05 PM
Yeah, I might call them today and see if I can get the VIN to check with the BMW dealer and maybe get a carfax if I can...

If I like it, I think I'd definitely want at least 2500 if not 3-4k off their asking price to really seriously consider buying.

If someone who is in the business of selling cars, does not provide you with a VIN # right away, they are trying to hide something. JMHO

Do the www.carproof.com free lemon check too.

Duct_Taper
12-04-2008, 12:30 PM
Yeah, I don't doubt that they'll give it to me - it's just not listed in the ad.

Edit: Called, and the VIN is WBADT53433CE94314

Edit 2: Carproof lemon check is clear. Called my local BMW dealer and it is an original Canadian car, and the original colour is 405 - Imola red.

Pretty easy to see if it's repainted. It's got 204k, that's pretty high mileage for a 2003.

If it were me, I'd hold off and keep looking... price is "affordable" but still... buy with a sound mind, not emotion.

Duct_Taper
12-04-2008, 05:30 PM
Yeah, I agree generally - the only reason I am even considering this one is that it's Imola... which I think looks incredibly good on the E39 and is almost impossible to find.

Qube
12-04-2008, 08:23 PM
On the other hand, you can buy Andrew's M5 with similar miles, older year, and similar price :)

Duct_Taper
12-04-2008, 09:37 PM
Is that mudmojo's M5?

If not... link?

Like I said... I'm only considering upgrading right now because that 530i is a rare colour that I'm unlikely to find again easily. If I am going to buy a black/silver/other common colour E39 then I'm happy to stick with my current E34 for another year or two until I have the money to really shop around and buy whatever E39 I want.

Qube
12-04-2008, 09:51 PM
Yep. Then if I were you, I'd wait...

Duct_Taper
12-04-2008, 10:38 PM
I probably will... but I still think I'll go see if I can drive the 530, 540, and M5 back-to-back and get an idea what they're all like. And if that 530 is somehow really impressive and I can get it for a reasonable price... so much the better.

mudmojo
12-05-2008, 01:11 AM
So... how did my name change to Andrew? ;)

Don't know about the 530 and 540 but the M5 feels hefty. It's a 2 ton car and feels like it. Being surrounded by agile cars, that heft is sometimes welcome. The M5 does have this sport mode which, among other things, makes the steering ratio quicken noticeably if you're into that. A go kart it will never be nor does it aspire to be one. Do the M-Sport series cars have that?

Duct_Taper
12-05-2008, 08:27 AM
I'm fairly sure the M-sport cars don't have the variable steering or the 'sport' button - just the M steering wheel, the sport seats, the sport suspension, and the M5 bodykit.

From the CarFax thread in general discussion...

"Inconsistent odometer reading.

34000 @ 12/27/2003

98342 @ 01/04/2005

51000 @ 12/28/2006

181892 @ 03/25/2008"

Looks like the 51000 might be a typo... should have been 151,000? Still a bit concerning.

I didn't go check it out on the weekend because the weather was crappy... if we get a nice day sometime in the next little while and I have time, I might go check it out.

Sounds like missing pixels on the display leading to a false reading on the Dec.06 service date. My M had the same issue.

I went to check it out today, i forgot my camera sorry! but in my honest opinion i would pass looks like its been used very rough, it was clean inside but outside looked dirty and it is starting to get rust bubbles.

Sorry i went so late, but they had a 2003 M5 with 125,000Km for approx. $25,000

Dado 540

How do determine that its been used rough? Did you take it for a spin? The roads are dirty with salt so if anyone drove it it will be dirty. Where is the rust, common E39 places?

by rough i was talking about the body, personally if somebody keeps their car clean they will take care of it. There was a dent beside the trunk, the bumper, fender was all scratched up, there was a scratch on the rear quarter panel, rust bubble on the hood and also the driver side hood didnt close properly.
