i am pretty sure not the vanos unit i think i many have something to do with the exhaust manifold maybe the gasket if i hit 6000 rpm the sound is gone form couple min then returns after i think it is result of poor oil circulation i will sea foam it see if it helps there no signs on the dash if i get it read will anything pop up what you guys think

here the thing i just picked it up a couples weeks ago and it had no sound at all everything was fine the guy i picked it up from how by the way owns like 5 bimmers told me he got the oil changed at a reliable garage he takes all his cars too . so everything went fine until one day i decide to push it a little hard once as a fellow m3 driver and all when i get back home i hear this sound so i immediately turned it off star researching it found it could be an oil problem called this guy up he gave me the mech number called him up this jackass had no clue what the hell he was doing he put 5w30 semi syntec castrol in the car i almost died when i heard it imeditaly flushed it and put in 7 fresh quarts of Mobil 1 ow-40 this guy did not even change he filter so i got another 3 knocked off the price all in all i got it for a good price is the only reason i still have it so i taught i let you guys know some history to why this is happening

no still there its anything as hell cant figure it out its much louder near the side of the exhaust manifold and i been getting kick back form the exhaust do you think this could be cause by the cat or something being blocked its although as i sayed before if i hit 6000rpm its compelty goes for a couple of mins what you guy think . exhaust or lifters gong to try uploading the sound on to youtube

Maybe lifter tick, Some people have had good luck with running thicker oil. In some extreme cases that won't solve the problem and the only remedy will be a head overhaul.

I'd try and take it into a shop for a better opinion/Diagnosis.

Good luck man!

its real easy man you pick up a bottle form parts source 12 sum thing the you get your to optimal temp meaning normal driving temp you unattached the brake boost line driver side ofthe engine right on the top can miss it let it suck in slowly 1/3 of the bottle turn the car off wait 10-15 min turn the car on you be able to see the smoke coming out big white clouds form exhaust keep revving till it looks like it almost all gone cleans out you engine real nice here is a youtube how to same thing for the e39 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MzqohWTChwY i also put 1/3 in the gas tanks

Is this 100% safe for the engine, are there any sideffects?

nice. You have an E39? Just curious of the location of the brake booster hose. Under the cabin air filter - driverside?

Pinto009

yup 528i its on the drive side only hose on the top same place as the e36 one you cant miss it

Seafoam has a high alcohol content, what people have been saying is that it is quiet harmful to rubber pieces in which it comes in contact with. You can't argue with results though.

it saved me a lot of trouble my lifter was probably stuck in some real sticky stuff but it cleaned it right out what ever was causing that sound is far gone now thanks to this stuff really save me the headache form opening it up. or spending big at the dealer that were going to charge me 3 hrs to just open it up to see what was wrong that almost 500$ and they gave me an estimate after i pointed out that many have this problem cost me over tow grand and that was a rough estimate for a new heads when the old one was fine just needed a cleaning. plus most of it is burnt off correct me if i a wrong

That seafoam seems to amazing. I wanna try it now! Ive been having a little bit of a delay in acceleration, as if it doesnt pick up right away. Hopefully this works!

Good to hear that you fixed it. Was the ticking noise just heard when the engine was cold or warm too or both when cold and warm (or was the intensity of the ticking different when cold vs warm)?

Pinto009

it was heard in both when it was cold and when it was warm
