I am still looking for a record player for my car since there is nothing better than the sound of vinyl :-)
I might consider an eight track as well.

Not only that... there really isn't anything special about that deck... it sounded good back then, big deal. There are a ton of decks that will/do sound better then it. Plus you have added control like time correction, crossovers, and parametric EQ's (in the higher end HU's)

I love Alpine, but I'd take my newer CDA-9887 over that ancient thing any day.

yes but if you drive a 1990 or older car, then you want a period correct deck in there !

I had one just like that. The only complaint was poor tuner reception. That seemed to be the problem with Alpine those days.

i know newer radios are way better but they dont look that good in a E30 and i dont need a big displays lightning up and distracting me all the time with all theys funny lights and other stuff they have i real would like to install one of theys older units in my e30 and when i need some more power or better i go out and buy a good radio what will be mounted with a remote panel and remote controll in the trunk to keep the car's intirior flow going but thats only my 2 cent's

IMO you're buying the wrong deck if you have a deck that has flashing lights, etc. That the one thing I absolutely hate about car audio. Which is one of the reasons why I would never buy a TV style deck. And also why I like Alpine's single DIN units. No flash, all performance.

My deck isn't flashy at all... And on top of that it has Alpine's BlackOut feature which completely turns off all the lights after 5 sec of not touching the controls. This option is meant for sound quality enhancements more then aesthetics but is an awesome feature when driving at night.

i get your point! and thats a nice radio you have but i think the old alpine fits way better into a e30 it is a intrigated design what works so well for me :)

but you know everyone likes diff. stuff and thats good so
the second choise i would do would be a Becker traffic pro Radio with navigation they also fit verry well with the E30 intirior design and the Radio light is the same amber collour then the E30 :)

im pretty sure some 50's vettes had vinyl players but couldnt be played while driving because it would skip so much from the bumps...

so the idea was thrown out after i think a 2 year production run.
and beleive me those vinyl players are highly sought after

since i installed my new stereo i actually stopped listening to MP3 cd's and brought back my originals. MP3 sounds like shit IMO. no real fullness to the sound. My new deck also plays dvd audio via DTS. so i bought a few and they sure sound nice. Is ther a very noticable difference between DVD-A and CD? I would not bet money on being able to pick it our for sure if played back to back, but it blows out any mp3 for sure.

Ma 2 cents

sorry for Hijackin' the thread

Are Cdr's the same as MP3 ? Is there a sound quality difference ?
My music is downloaded and burned at 320kb and the quality is same as original.

Most old alpine deck's i've come across don't play burnt cds.

Have you tried?

The late 80's-early 90's Alpines play CDR's, the later 90's Alpine cd players dont...

But yes the 7909 plays burnt cd's. :)

I don't understand who could justify paying that much for a 18 year old cd player.

Cause Robbs a baller like that!

PIMP deck man! I still have one sitting in my basement I think. Sound quality was great for its time! It was a hand-me-down from my uncle, it had the external amp as well. the model i had has no internal amp.

and I had a 9887 for a short time. nothing special about it NOTORIOUS VR. I do agree Its the best deck to buy for the price now though! I bought it at cost, and I sold it last month. Alpine electronics are so appealing at cost prices.

haha sorry mAn! The old alpine has sentimental value to me!

Did you adjust the time alignment yet on your 9887? Did you buy the extra module?

Nope... Although I think it's a good feature to have (for some people).. Time alignment kinda goes out of whack anyway with all the 'new' noises your car makes while driving. But I'm making good use of the Crossovers and Parametric EQ... They're both very very good imo.

And for me I still like listening to my CD's. The quality is just simply better then listening through an iPod. And it's a noticeable difference.

Also, no I haven't bought the Imprint thing yet.. but I would love to try it out. Most people say it's brilliant. But at over $200, I'm quite happy how I've been able to tune the deck to my ear's for now *rockout*

BEEN THERE DONE THAT!!

How about the same track of REM: Loosing my Religion because it's caught in constant loop, over and over and over and over again. I put a hammer through the dash of that car.

Hey, good news ! The power supply was gone on this 7909 unit, so I had the unit repaired by Chris at S&S electronics here in Toronto (www.s-selectronics.com/978/index.html). Highly hghly recommended repair shop ! WC Enterprises in Markham http://www.wcent.ca/ (Canadian Alpine authorized repair shop) said it was not repairable due to part being NLA...haha !

Sounds amazing ! I Havent heard anything this clean in car audio ever !!
Even the installer was impressed , and hes been doing car audio for 20+ years...

Here's some pics and a video !

Nothing special..

The rest of the stuff I have in my civic came with the car when I got it.

- 6.5" Infinity reference coaxials in front doors.
- 10" 4ohm Pioneer IMPP sub in sealed box in hatch
- Pioneer 4 channel GM-X564.

I wanna get rid of the stuff I currently have during the springtime and
build a nice sounding oldschool system cuz I think I can get something more
powerful and better sounding.

As much as I like a clean sound... Over doing it in a car is pretty much worthless... Sure go with the best that you can, but I've never understood people spending $10k on a system and then trying to justify their 'investment' by saying it's because of SQ. Bull, in a car there are too many variables.

Anywho, enough with the rant (which wasn't directed to you btw). If you want oldschool, wait for Zed Audio's new amp line up. He supposed to be releasing a 6ch amp that will obviously have his legendary touch. 6 x 150W is what it's supposed to have.

Just a suggestion :) Unless you really want to be period correct, in which case take a look on ebay and see what you can find, but be prepaird to spend a lot of money on the good old stuff.
