BMW is counting on Americans, currently the world's largest consumers of mobile metal, to retaliate against oversized SUVs and their associated fuel bills by getting into the X6. X6 Active Hybrid that is, when it goes to market in 2009 after its public unveiling at Detroit International Motor Show in January.

These are the latest pics of final stages of testing. The car will use a Two-Mode-Hybrid-Concept which is a two-electric-engine concept that BMW says will be able to run 100 percent on electric power. You can see the upsized power dome bulging at the front to tell this X6 ain't exactly standard issue. A saving of some 20 percent in fuel is expected from the X6 Hybrid.

all that work to save 20% on fuel, I dont think that this car will sell... The cost of replacing a Toyota Prius battery is a subtantial amount of the value of the car. Hybrids are a bad investment for people and a very worthy sales pitch for most companies. The TTC paid an additional $400K per bus to get the hybrid models, and their expected service life is 2 years according to Orion.. Gotta love lobbing governments.

A 20% savings and thats it. Come on! they must be able to build it to be better than that. Hybrids are great on paper and people buy them to say I drive a hybrid but you pay for the economy upfront.
Hopefully the % savings will improve as more hybrid vehicles are built.

I'm not impressed. Little savings + bigger up-front cost, WTF?!? And just IMAGINE how much it would cost to fix that system out of warranty if anything breaks.
