Hey guys. I took my oil cooler of my Auto transmission, due to a broken line, and a bunch of oil started to leak out. Now the question is, what kind of oil do i have to replace it with, if it leaked out of the torque converter, how would the oil get back into torque converter, if the oil is black would that be something i would have to take consideration in, and what color is the oil supposed to be? Any one have any tips?

Transmission fluid has to be red, black means that your trans is slipping.
Call BMW and see what fluid they recommend. I believe Dextron is what most cars use.

Depending on the year and the model of the trans, there are two fluids.
The original color is either red or light gold (like engine oil)

I am quite sure it is not Dextron.

540's (M60B40) trannys are, indeed, 5HP30 with the infamous "lifetime" fluid.

Use only the approved fluid in this chart...black is not good

Ahh but "life time" by BMW is defined for only certain amount of miles like 200,000 for exaple. But they dont tell you that. Dextron, i believe is for power steering.

Generally true but you gotta be careful there too. BMW used CHF fluid in "some" of their PS systems also.
