View Full Version : BMW cancels E92 M3 CSL

There were around 1,400 examples of the BMW e46 M3 CSL built, and by all accounts they were exceptionally well received. However, according to Ludwig Willisch, the boss of the automaker's M division, the current e92 M3 won't get the same treatment. He or perhaps the accountants feel that "based on current numbers, there is most likely insufficient demand for the M3 CSL."

If a current scorching version of the e92 were to exist, it would have been bumped by anywhere from 36 to 56 horsepower, shed 200 pounds or more, worn some different tires and a set of bigger lungs. In light of the possible volume, though, which would be small, BMW or again, its accountants would rather focus on the X6 and X5 for now. Thanks for the tip, Mike!

i think they rather do it further down the line of the e92 generation. kind of like what they did with the e46. have it come out a couple years after everything.
or maybe not go into the whole csl thing until a few generations down the road. kind of making a 20 year return to things.

Yeah, I agree with Luis... I don't understand why they would release a CSL M3 so close to the release of the normal M3. Give it a few years and they may change their tune with a facelifted M3 CSL.

it appears that in your anger you killed the plans for the e92 M3 csl...

They realized that no matter what the GT-R V-spec will still beat it on their home track.

Nah, there are always gonna be enough suckers like me out there that buy stuff for the badge. Sitting in a service department next to a lowly Sentra owner? Pff.

Well, these cars arn't built overnight. It takes a few years to build it, test it, fine tune it, make sure everything is reliable, production ready, etc., etc...

You're honestly on to something there. I always thought people who bought luxury nameplates for the dealer treatment were just snooty pricks, but that all came crashing down when I went to a Mazda dealer to pick up some bolts for Raisa's car. If I paid $40k+ for an RX-8 and had to go into such a place for service, I'd be pretty sad. I think I'm completely spoiled by BMW dealers.

It's official, BMW is a pussy brand for the masses. E46 whispered it in my ear and now it's like a fog horn.

Funny how in my area I see more E46 M3's then I do civics and they are all driven by chicks and the occasional tool in a vert.

An e92 CSL would probably look horrible. How can you top this

I personally not feeling that rear end or very different rims on that GTR!

Even Mercedes started doing the BS series... BMW is weak for not doing anything special with their M brand! I bet they would sell 200 to 300 CSL cars like M3 or M6!

yeah but you have to realize that BMW built a few of these back in 2001 just so they could compete in the ALMS with their V8 powered m3. They sold them for a quater mill each. So they are super rare, pretty much a detuned race car made street legal
... they were so good that the guy in need for speed most wanted had one lol

As will the Corvette ZR-1 (currently holds the fastest production car at Nurburgring. (as per Toronto Star this past Saturday).

I love how an american production car's got the top spot there (for now) :D!!

The price of a CSL will be at least triple the price of a M3 and double of a M6. The CSL won't exactly sell like a M3 or M6 as a result as it's not really affordable.

Same here.

When I take my Mazda 3 in for service, they make me want to get rid of it and get a 1 series. Either their service really inhales, or BMW's spoiled me.

Even funnier is that the ZR1 time was set by an engineer (not a race driver), with an automatic car. The times will only fall once pro drivers get some time in them.

V-Spec will probably beat the ZR1 once the final times are set though. But then apparently Acura wants the title with the new NSX...*rockout*

Dodge Viper ACR - 7:22.1 ( http://www.autoblog.com/2008/08/27/unofficial-dodge-viper-acr-laps-ring-in-record-7-22-1-w-video/ )

Doesn't the ACR run on Pilot Sport Cups? That's at least 4 seconds compared to the street tires on the ZR-1.

Same reason I feel that CSL times are useless.

All I can say is that I can't wait to see what the new M3 ALMS car will do next year GT2 class will be amazing to watch with BMW Porsche and Ferrari. The GTR would fall into the GT1 class probably if nissan build an ALMS car.

Too many new "super cars" for somewhat affordable pricing now, to make the CSL worth it.

When the GTR is running the times its doing for sub 100k, it will be tough for competitors to beat it.

Well, if they come stock, than it's stock, can't really argue with that.

but there are rumors that the GTR was running higher boost and race gas and the ZR1 supposedly was on race gas as well.
the times around the ring are starting to be with cars that aren't stock or how you get them on the street.

fyi, my brother hates the service he gets from mazda and most of the time he has to tell the mechanics whats wrong and whats to be replaced and sometimes how to do it.
