View Full Version : Anyone have a OBD-II (CAN) reader?

My wifes car is FIVE DAYS out of warranty and it threw a check engine light.. You can imagine she's pretty upset about it. Anyone have a reader to see what the prob is? She says her gas cap might have been a little bit loose so we'll see if that fixes it.

Unless, you won't let me borrow it, then you suck. :) Ya, the Mazda 3. Warranty ran out on Aug 17 and the dealer won't back date anything for me. Assholes. I think the only thing wrong is the warranty expiration timer went off. :p

Turns out I guess it doesn't need a CAN reader.. Anyone else have a reader I can borrow?

Well, it does need a CAN reader, so this should work (I think!) but I get

"OBDII bus is shorted to Vbath or ground"

in scantool.net software. WOBD just gives me a "ignition not on" error. Google reveals that the device itself my be assembled with one part reversed. :o

Yeah it worked for two separate e39's and a Z3 oh and an e36 328. But maybe the mazda 3 uses a different connector?

"As a rule of thumb, GM cars and light trucks use SAE J1850 VPW (Variable Pulse Width Modulation). Chrysler products and all European and most Asian imports use ISO 9141 circuitry. Fords use SAE J1850 PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) communication patterns.

There are some variations among captive imports such as the Cadillac Catera, a German Opel derivative, which uses the European ISO 9141 protocol. If you have first hand knowledge of other such variations, please send them in and, together, we can build a more complete listing.

On 1996 and later vehicles, you can tell which protocol is used by examining the OBD II connector:

J1850 VPW--The connector should have metallic contacts in pins 2, 4, 5, and 16, but not 10.
ISO 9141-2--The connector should have metallic contacts in pins 4, 5, 7, 15, and 16.
J1850 PWM--The connector should have metallic contacts in pins 2, 4, 5, 10, and 16."

So the question is does the Mazda use ford connectors or euro/import connectors?

Okay just found it. Ford/Mazda uses J1850 PWM. BMW uses ISO9141. So that reader isn't going to work. Sorry man.

warm start up I get check engine light and bad idle untill I push the gas and everything go's back to normal...

PS your e92 looks fing sweet but get some tint :)

I got the Mazda read.. purge valve failed, once, so code is cleared and car is a-ok. :)
