I'm thinking about my options down the road when the engine gets tired,

bore it out? or swap?

89 IX touring, I'm pretty sure I still need the ix motor, or custom-make a bunch of shit on something else so it'll fit.

Yeah sure you can do that.

Get the next oversize ring set, have the block bored to match. Course you'll need a belt&tensioner, bolts, gaskets, all that stuff. Might as well do the valve guides, valves, rockers and shafts. Done mostly yourself expect about 500 - 600 for parts, and 300-400 for the head/bore work.

Alternatively find a low mileage engine for less than 800 and freshen it up. But they are getting harder to find.

Later.

Sorry as for types of engines that would be a direct swap? Off the top of my head i'd say the the 320i 325e 325i 325ix, 318 would fit obviously not sure about the tranny.

Pretty much anything will go in as long as you have everything that the engine requires and the space.

IXs have an iX specific block and oil pan, meaning you can't just drop in any m20 and damn sure you can't use an m10/42(318) without doing some major custom work.

with an iX you rule out any possible cost effective motor swaps, you'd have to spend a fortune in custom work, anything is possible with enough money.

Your best options are building an m20 or going turbo.
