So, I found out that a friend of the family recently bought up a junkyard, Woot! I drove down to his place on Friday afternoon to take a look at his comp setup and fix up his Crackberry. He mentoned to me on the phone that he only had one BMW and it was an E36...turns out it's a grey 320i auto, it actually looks decent and I'm pretty sure he'll let me grab some parts off it.

Anybody know anything about 320's? I'm not sure why but I expected an inline 4 under the hood but I think it might be a 6. What I do know for sure is that if the condenser and heater valve are solid, I'll be grabbing those for sure. I might even grab the nose panel and front bumper...anyone know what kind of diff is under there? It's auto so it might have some ridiculously high ratio.

Some pretty cool stuff in a junkyard. Some cars look like there's nothing wrong from far but as soon as you get closer, it's like Whoa! How the hell....I totally expected to see some blood in some of the cars but thankfully didn't. I saw an Expedition that only had the roof/windshield smashed in. Otherwise I bet the thing still runs! He also had an old school Land Rover. I figured it was just there because it was old but nope, it had been hit on the front driver's side. Anyway, just thought I'd share and hope someone knows stuff about stuff.

320 has a inline 6 cyld but isn't the same as the 2.5l - S52, it's a tiny 2.0l and has the power of a 4 pot but the fuel milage of a 6 pot, I personaly hate them but they do have more low end TQ then a M44 and almost no mod potential.
The diff is a type 168 3:91 ratio, 320 pretty much has nothing engine/drive train that would fit your car.

leather seats any good?

v_bimmer
07-01-2008, 06:24 PM
yeah 320 has an inline 6 m50, which is really simular to 2.5l m50, with a little less power!! you can take off the intake manifold from it, its pretty pricey!! also the brakes are the same as the 325 e36, which would be a good upgrade for 318 i quess!! 2l m50 are very strong engines, i used to have one before the swap to a 2.5l!!

other from the engine you can salvage non rusted fenders, doors, trunk lid, or any suspension parts such as control arms and sways(came on sport 320s)

Thanks Jeff and V bimmer. I'm not looking to strip it completely, just letting everyone know there is a decent parts car out there. I figure the owner should at least get to sell some stuff off it...

I thought it had a 6 but when I started typing this post, I started doubting myself...

Sorry Bear, no leather.

the m50 manifold on the 320 is more restrictive than a m52 manifold. you need a m50 manifold off the 2.5L

Joey, Can you snag me the windsheild washer pump???

Jamil20
07-03-2008, 11:51 AM
I'm looking for all the under bumper plastics+brake ducts, and a passenger side fog light with bracket. :)

I have the air dam, cost me a pretty penny from the stealer. :(

I let him know I'm willing to come get everything but he's been hesitating to let me rape the car....He mentioned it might be cheaper to just sell me the car but I've got no room for that and what the heck would I do with a not quite empty shell afterwards.

I'll let you guys know what happens.

So:
Washer pump
All bumper bits, including bumper

Buy the shell, then just give the shell to me after your done raping it.
I could turn it into some kind of off road montrocity... or at least have fun with it in some kind of demelition durby...

Okay, so if I go get everything off the car, I can get everything uber cheap OR he'll sell me the entire car for $800.

If I can break even and someone can come get the shell, everyone's welcome to grab whatever but I want to at least break even if it's going to sit in my garage/laneway...

I was mistaken with diff ratio.
3:91 is a type 188 auto ratio for the e36.
type 168 auto's had 4:44 ratio.

Tony, have you checked realoem if it's the same part?

The more I think about it, the more I might just take the whole car. I might try and recoup on the local classifieds for whatever you guys don't take...

Jeff: Do you have a car dolly or a trailer?

jeffrie
07-14-2008, 10:48 AM
No, but I do have access to a trailer big enough to roll a car up onto.

Same part # for the pump.

As for the rad forget it, it's just a leaking hose near the firewall. I put some bubble gum and duck tape and she runs like she's new..

carjoe

Okey dokey. Parts car confirmed. I'm hoping to have it here by the end of the week. Exciting, I get to wrench on a car that doesn't actually have to be put back together!

Now, how to get it here...

ecuconnection
07-21-2008, 10:10 PM

are the front fender any good ??

carjoe
07-22-2008, 01:04 PM
Fenders: I think so. From what I remember the car is silver and pretty basic for an E36. No sunroof, no leather.

I didn't notice any rust bubbles at all come to think of it. When it gets here, I'll take pics for everyone.

Bear, you should come take a look at it...

How about a rad too? Will that one fit on my car?

My engine fan grenaded last night and took out my rad. Left a nice dent in the hood too.

carjoe
07-29-2008, 12:36 AM
Well done. 7lbs. and counting. Though the fit is more like a really motivating/annoying teacher.

Cool, I'll call ya.

Apparently the car doesn't start, I think it might have an immobilizer but I'll be damned if I can find the "brain"...

So yeah, it's here and I've got pics. I'll post em up later.

Start making a list!

Me want:

Rad
Some under bumper plastics
Fog lights?

carjoe
07-29-2008, 10:49 PM
It's got fogs but they're cracked. I guess the brackets are probably still good. i did notice the temp sensor is working! Woot! No more -37c dinging for me!

Let me check the part number for the rad with realoem.

Rad number is:
17111728908-320i
17111728908-328i

Giddy up Ahmad. Same part number! I guessed at the production months but the car models were right.

okey dokey, here are the pics.

It actually looks decent. I'd love to know why it was junked...

I finally found the alarm behind the driver's side knee protector cover. Tiny little thing. DEI 4200.

Jamil20
07-30-2008, 10:24 AM
It does look pretty good.

I need that rad real soon, Joey. I don't know how I can pick it up. I don't think I can drive around on my bike with a radiator strapped to my back.

carjoe
07-30-2008, 10:32 AM
I'll see what I can do. I've gotta run to CT and grab a catch pan or something to get all the coolant....

I got ya covered if you want it.

Jeffrie, I still haven't pulled the front wheels but if the back calipers are anything like the fronts, they aren't leaking and seem to be working. The parking brake shoes were literally rusted to the drums. I couldn't move the car into the garage on my own. It took 4 people to push it in place.

I gotta go buy more jackstands...

jeffrie
08-21-2008, 11:08 AM
Trailer can hold 14 tonne + it's not mine, it's my neighbors.
A getto car dolly I'v used before is one jack on the front cross member and another on the rear subframe with a couple guys pushing the car in place.

What would that caliper (front passenger) be worth with you doing all the labor to remove it.
Do not have the time for a couple weeks to go yank it myself.

carjoe
08-21-2008, 12:54 PM
I can pull the caliper off no problem. Price? Beats me. I have no idea what anything is worth. Hell, pay the shipping and if it works, paypal me later. Need just one or both sides?

We tried the jack thing but the tow truck driver left it in the laneway and the jack just sinks into the asphalt. I almost used the truck to just push it but thankfully 4 people provided enough power...

I saw this if anyone is interested. An E30 parts car for $200? It's a 318i though.

Yahh ashfault is pretty soft, would have to run out to princess auto and pay the big bucks for 4 10 dollar dollys.

Appreaciate it if you could tear that off, I need the front passenger caliper, I'd give you 50 bucks for it and can stop by for the exchange after work if that's worth your time.
@ the very least it'll unlock that tire.
I work in Ottawa so your not far away, new their 130 each.

carjoe
08-21-2008, 03:46 PM
Cool. I'll pull them tonight and bring them with me to work. It might be easier for you that way.

I thought about the dollies but I can make better use of my neighbour for free. :)

carjoe
08-22-2008, 10:33 AM
Got the caliper.

Here's an anomaly, the diff says "S345" on the tag and according to the manual, it's got a 5 speed automatic tranny. Didn't know that....

Oh, anyone know if you can reuse LCA's and bushings? The one's on the car are in amazing shape.

jeffrie
08-22-2008, 11:05 AM
Bear pick up that diff over mine, that their is a nice lucky break "S" stands for Limited Slip and 3:45 is the ratio.

LCA are interchangable over all E36's models except for early built 92 models and M3's.

Want to meet after 4pm some time today for that caliper?

carjoe
08-22-2008, 11:14 AM
Name the time and place. I'm in the East end but I'll meet you halfway.

Perfect. I'll be in the bimmer...follow the oil trail and gleaming rust.

Out front?

Side nearest to the Bank towards the shopping center.
Wish I could say "the guy in a bimmer practicing drifts..." but need that caliper.

How did you manage geting those drive shaft bolts loose??? Mine look realy rusted... The IMpact would be a key tool to have for sure

jeffrie
08-24-2008, 01:07 PM
Penetrating oil and a wrench, they were not seized on in any of my cars but if worst case scenario use a torch and heat them.

ecuconnection
08-24-2008, 03:02 PM
yaya swap done !! Thanks JOE +++ started at 8:30 am and removed the diff x3 and got done at 11:30am ... The diff that was in my car just has a broken clip and bad seal and it is also a LSD

Jeff do you know if the MAf from that 320 will work on my car? The diff Wines a bit when I take corners but the overall feeling of the car feels way better prob just needs oil changed up in the diff

carjoe
08-24-2008, 05:13 PM
That was fun, well, not the starting early part and the breaking bolts on my car part but that was still a good time.

I'm glad I could help, I'd rather see someone take what they need than to bring it to the wrecker and nobody gets anything...

ecuconnection

Yes but not a simple swap.
Here is a pretty good step by step MAF conversion DIY if you wanted to do the mod.
