Nobody sells that here anymore, they've all moved to 5w-50 for some reason.

All Mobil1 on Part Source / Canadian Tire / Wal-Mart shelves = garbage
All Castrol Syntec in general = garbage

*garbage = semi-synthetic, i.e. worse than BMW intended for the car to run on.

I heard that rumor too and used to believe it, but they carry different types. The "high mileage" etc Mobil1 are semi-synthetic. The synthetic is synthetic.

EDIT: if you don't believe me, here's the Mobil1 product line. The 2nd one is the expensive one you find in Partssource, CT, Walmart etc. Which one on the list is the non-garbage one:

I use the Mobile 1 0W-40 because that is what is in our oil lines at work

Any chance your oil lines may somehow find themselves directed into some sort of bucket... and that bucket find its way into my hands?

All Castrol Syntec in general = garbage

I find that highly coincidental because my car thinks so too*shiner*

They say the service indicator on the car tells you when you need a oil change based of your driving conditions/habits (how fast, how hard, etc). I used to think that was b.s.

I always ignored the indicator even though i reset it everytime but i noticed a huge difference in how it reacts when i used catrol syntec 5W40 instead of the lubromoly 5W40.

When I had the castrol, It said i needed my oil changed right before i hit the 5000km mark and when i switched to lubromoly not even half of the bars on the service indicator has moved when i change my oil at 5k or 6k.

How the hell does that work?

Referring to an E36 of course*rockout*

Bimmersport sells lubramoly for almost exactly the same price.

mobil 1 isn't flat out horrible oil, but lubramoly is MUCH better.

It's not a rumour, they lost some of their standards certificates. I remember reading that some huge airplane manufacturer (like Boeing or similar) announced that they will no longer use Mobil 1 because of the downgrade.

The 0W-40 is still good (just look at the list of approvals on that page as compared to the 5W-30 or 10W-30).

That said, even the good Mobil 1 never topped any oil comparison testing. Think Lubro/Luquimoly, Royal Purple, AMSoil, etc. And to add to the lack of interest in this sale, are there even any BMW motors which should be running either of the grades on sale? 5W-40 is the M5x grade, 10W-60 is newer M motors, 20W-50/10W-40 is older 2v/cyl, etc.

Isn't German Castrol 100% synthetic.? It's the only Castrol actually made in Germany... only comes in a 0W-30 though.

According to the M5 manual I need to run 15w40.
According to Charlie, I can run 10w50(I used to run that until last oil change).
I;ve ran 5W50 which should be ok, if I can run 5w40, then I can run 5w50.

I was thinking of trying the 15w50.

I am not too concerned with Brand names, I change my oil every 3K. Yes, that is synthetic every 3K.

Ughhh, so headache inducing.

Don't run less than 10 weight. Your engine has tolerances too high for something so light at low temperature. If I still had an S38 I'd be using RP Racing 51.

Thanks for the info on the sale. This whole oil debate is crazy. If you change your oil every 5k you are never going to have a problem. I use mobil1, drive my car like I stole it and will never have a problem with the oil. For the record Air Canada uses mobil jet oil in every one of their airplanes. I have yet to see proof that a street engine using correct grade of oil, changed at the correct intervals has caused a motor to fail because of the brand of oil. Belive what you want, mobil1 and castrol will work just fine. I have no doubt some oils in the lab are better than others, but the 15+ cars I have owned made it to 300K with whatever oil I chose to use.
Thats just my 2 cents

Not only that, but Consumers Reports ran a test with every type of oil, dino, synthetic, all kinds of grades, with rebuilt engines, ran them through all kinds of driving conditions, changing the oil after 3k miles and at 6k miles. Then stripped them to look inside - no difference, at all.

Dear God, 5W50 in an S38? I'm telling Marcus Glarner on you.

BTW the 15W50 was discontinued like 2 years ago. If you see any lingering around buy it, like every store ran out immediately after the announcement.

Are you talking about the 1996 test? That thing was fundamentally flawed, they gave everything the same rating in the end (meaning real synthetic Mobil 1 and like Castrol GTX). They used NYC taxis as test cars, meaning cars which never turned off all day, or warm-started. One of the biggest tests of an oil is cold-starting, which those cars never really did.

I'm an avid CR reader (probably never missed an issue since 1993 or so), but that test was useless.

I can see the ratings over the long run, but for any short change interval (< 8K) I go with what's the cheapest.

yup... and I've only been able to find it in 1L jugs.... nothing more... I've never tried it though... My VR usually gets LiquiMoli full synth only (unless I'm in a bind then Syntec will have to do).

Just once! All I could find!

15W50 is at the parts source near my house, just bought it and am running it in the car already.
The guy at Parts Source told me they can get it.:huh?:
Maybe I shoudl go back and buy all the rest, if there's even any.

The weird thing is I never saw it before. THey apparently just started carrying it.

Interesting. They phased the 15W-50 out of all Canadian suppliers back in 2006, and that was the GOOD full synthetic stuff. Actually I'm on the Mobil USA site now, it says: "Back by popular demand, Mobil 1 15W-50". But on the Canadian site, it still only lists 5W-50.

In any case, Part Source sells even better oils for your car. Royal Purple and AMSoil, they're like $7.99-8.99 per quart.

Yeah, I actually saw them first over on bf.c in the Style 5 thread. I like how you posted right after me.

I think you should polish the lips. Or at least get BBS stickers for them (I did this with mine, looks 10x better).

I am going to polish the lips when I need a new set of tires. Should be about a year's time.

I am getting BBS stickers, just don't know where to get them.
For the time being I want to black out the blue in the bmw signs.

BMW specs ACEA A3/B3. Seems like all Mobile1 oil only meets A1/B1.

I can't find a Mobil1 oil that has the A3/B3 specs. Castrol does meet that spec but dependent on weight of oil.

Partsource carries it. CT does sometimes. $9 a bottle though. Go over the border and it's like $6 a bottle.

Mobil 1 0w-40 is the only one that is BMW LL01 approved though.
