So I plan on getting a 6spd swap done this summer. The only problem is actually locating a 6spd from a 540i and associated parts necessary for the swap.. (lines, master/slave cylinder, clutch resevoir, driveshaft, shifter, console, hardware, flywheel, etc).

Can anyone help me out... where's a good place to start lookin for the tranny etc?

Start with what you're willing to pay, and I'll ask a friend of mine who can get you all of that.

awesome website.. thanks.

I'd like to keep it under 1800 for the parts, but that may or may not be possible depending on what I find out there.

Well it's over your budget but if you're interested, I can get you the following for 2500:

Transmission, shifter, shift mechanism, pedals, drive shaft, diff, clutch with flywheel, master, slave and reservoir.

What kind of diff? I have a factory LSD in it now ... I think 2.81, not sure, but I want a 3.15 LSD for the 6spd setup.

I will advise. You can be sure it's something good. This guy knows what he's doing and you can also rest assured that nothing will be junk but the best used parts you can get. He owns this site:

Not sure on the ratio, need to check, but it's the diff off a 540i6 (along with all the rest of the components, so you're basically getting the entire driveline behind the engine from a 540i6.

Here's my advice:
sell car... buy new car with 6 spd.

Are you volunteering to find him one? I hope you have a lot of vacation time saved up.

Not that easy to just go find a 540i/6 from the factory. And you'd pay a premium for it. This car is already in good shape, why try and find another?

Well I never did the tranny swap b/c I decided to spend the money on other things, but now it's getting to the point where my autotragic is going to die soon.

I've found a couple 6spd tranny's available in the city. I just need to find out whether the guys at BimmerSport can help me out.

Anyone got any advice for me?

Finally doing it, eh?

BimmerSport will do a good job, there are more than enough people here who will vouch for them. You already got all the parts together, or just have them lined up?

You doing this soon? Before April? lol

+1 for www.willz.ca. I got my 3.38 LSD from Will, and he was a real stand up guy. He met me halfway, and even had the diff inspected for me by Marcus Glarner.... I'd definitely do business with him again...

Bimmersport should be able to help alot, they'll know what other 6spds can work, and what other parts are interchangable with other mods.

They might even be able to get the parts cheaper than you can, so give em call before spending alot on parts.

I don't know. The check engine light started to flicker on and off though out my daily commute and the shifts are getting violent.. Definitely not shifting smoothly. The torque converter makes all kinds of funny noises now too. No Trans Program warnings yet though.

This tranny may not even last another month. I found a couple 6spd tranny's at the wreckers for $800, but I gotta talk to the guys at BimmerSport and find out what the other associated hardware is going to cost.

I agree. I've dealt with him a couple times and it's always been a pleasant experience. He seems to know E34 cars inside out too so you wouldn't have to worry about getting wrong parts and shit like that.

if you were, you'd know that the 4L V8 manual cars in '95 had a 6 speed. 1 year only car like the E30 318is.*rockout*

Yeah V8's did come in 5 speed manuals. 530i's got 5 speeds in both years that they were available.

and YES they will bolt up to the M60B40.

can't imagine why you'd want to though. The overdrive gear makes a world of difference fuel-wise on long trips

True, but I guess anything is better than automatic when you have the urge to row threw a couple gears.
