I have these burgandy fenders as some of you know..
I went to cawthra autmotive they matched my paint and i also got a bottle of WHITE primer...

Now my question is, i have no friggen idea what kind of paint this guy put on the fenders
When i sand them it comes off (after a while) as like charcoal little dust bits of red..
if i wet sand...it drips down red like crazy...

here are some pictures....how much should i sand? till that colour disappears? have i sanded enough ... i know lot of places are still red...but will the white primer just go over all of that fine?
(yes ill take the fender off to paint)

also should i just get the circular sand paper that sticks on to the drill and go at it that way with 200?
or should i not even bother and just sand a bit more till all areas are even and then primer it?

Without seeing it, it is hard to say, but it sounds like he used more of an enamel paint that didn't really cure. Does it feel more like “plastic”?

You should dry sand it. Try to get it to close to the metal or primer. Keep it smooth.

Make sure you clean the fender properly, so you don’t get silicone poisoning. This is usually evident by a phenomena known as “Fish Eyes”. The paint basically doesn’t stick in places causes bubbles or fish eyes. (http://www.pfonline.com/articles/clinics/0706cl_paint4.html)

I wouldn't do that. There are automotive paint strippers.

Try dry sanding it first.

hmm ok...
well the paint is weird if i use an all purpose cleaner ...and a bounty towel lets say the paint comes off a bit lol
like it leaves red on the white bounty

try using an automotive stripper, or even aircraft, probably take it all off.. but be careful.

no need to strip it to metal, unless ur doing a show car here.

Slap some primer on there, if it doesn't cover well put another coat on.
Is your paint base/clear? or acrylic enamel?

Yes, NOOO need to take off all the paint. Just use GOOD primer! Go back to Cawthra and get the yellow 2K urethane filler primer ($12), the best product you can get...Do a few coats of that, it covers A LOT! and holds very well.

Without seenig it, i would say do 220 grid on the full surface, then price/wetsand untill you are happy with the results, keeping in mind most imperfections will show on the paint.

Thanks a lot... always helpful :)

I ended up getting when i went 2 spray cans of the paint..
and he told me to get the white primer... i shall just give the primer a shot see how it goes and do as they say , wet sand it..

yeah i did 220 and 400!
should be ok...

thanks!

Only reason I suggested taking it to metal is because I have had some weird paint reactions happen before where my base coat just bubbles everything off and I have to start again.

Then I get fairly upset. Thats been mostly with bikes though.

same thing happend to me when i got my new bumper, i figured it wouldnt be so bad, but the paint kept wrinkling, so i would sand again, clean the area paint it, and again the paint would wrinkle! so i just ended up taking it to a body shop and got it done right!

Sounds like oil contamination, happens all the time with bikes.

Are you using Spray Cans or compressor and paint sprayer?
Looks good.
