Alright so a little while ago the auto trans in my 91 525i blew n i got the dreaded trans program error, so anyways ive been trying to determine what to do with it and ive finally decided im gonna rebuild the engine and put a 5 speed in it after all it is my baby. so after alot of searching i cant seem to find what transmissions will bolt up to the m50 engine. any insight on the 5 speed swap is much appreciated.

you need a getrag tranny. from another 525 or 325
other transmissions bolt up, but are not direct swaps, you will need other parts to make them work.

you can also use a getrag that came on 320s m50s

If he has a 91, He may have the m20 motor. If so the m20 5spd is very easy to find and cheap. of course you're gonna need extras like flywheel, slave cyl and what not.

So if i were to get a 5 speed out of a 325 wud that mean that i need to use a drive shaft from a 5 speed 525 considering the 325 shaft would be too short? would there be any issues of mounting it to the trans at all?

your going to need a new driveshaft anyways because the auto and manuel drivshafts are different length.
