i noticed dark smoke coming out of my muffer 1994 bmw 320i so i took a closer look and seen some sort of cotton/fibre/insulatio or what ever hell it is does anyone know what this is and does it have something 2 do with me failing an e-test pleae reply............................................. .....

Very typical with mufflers, (fiber)glass packing to reduce noise. It would only affect the emission test criteria on a visual inspection.
If the muffler was damaged or open as such, then they would not test the vehicle and issue a fail.
